Saturday 9

Saturday 9 with  Sam.

Welcome to Saturday: 9.
Saturday 9: The Fool on the Hill (1968)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

Chosen because Monday is April Fool's Day.

1) As an April Fool's prank, Taco Bell once announced they had purchased The Liberty Bell and renamed it The Taco Liberty Bell. Describe your perfect taco.I love  a soft taco supreme with  luscious  meat, tomato,  lettuce, cheese,  a nice dollop of  sour cream and absolutely no re fried beans!

2) Similarly, as an April Fool's prank, the Ford Motor Co. was supposed to wipe out the national deficit by purchasing the naming rites to a beloved monument, renaming it the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial. What model car do you drive?
We love our Nissan Pathfinder

3) In 1998, Burger King got in on the April Fool's Day fun by promoting a special "Left-Handed Whopper," designed to be easier for a leftie to hold. Describe your perfect burger.
I love a whopper...  nice  thin patty,   thin slices o ripe tomato, lettuce,  melted cheese and  soft bun!  I'll take mine sliced in half.. easier for eating!
4) In 1962, when color TV was still new, a Swedish station pranked viewers by telling them they could convert their black/white sets to color by cutting up a nylon stocking and stretching it across the screen. Of course, in 1962, more women wore nylons and screens were smaller. How big is your TV? Are there any nylon stockings in your home?
We have a 23in and a 40 inch...  not into  those massive TVs.  I probably could find a pair or two in a drawer in the guest room!

5) In 1957, the BBC ran an April Fool's story about how the Swiss were enjoying a "bumper spaghetti crop," with spaghetti literally growing on trees. Viewers who called the station, asking how to grow a spaghetti tree of their own, were told to place a sprig of spaghetti in a can of tomato sauce and hope for the best. Have you ever fallen for an April Fool's prank? I cannot remember but [probably over those 30 years of teaching...  I'll never forget though how our  young daughter  replaced salt in the sugar bowl and got her dad but good  one morning!

6) When Crazy Sam was growing up, her mother would surprise her on April Fool's Day by slipping a rubber worm or plastic spider in her lunch box. When you were in school, did you more frequently brown bag it or buy your lunch in the cafeteria line?  I believe it must have been bout half and half.. I remember bagging it,  but I also remember some great cafeteria meals.. loved their rolls and  vegetable soup.

7) This week's song was an international hit for Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. Because of the song's bossa nova arrangement, everyone assumed the lead singer, Lani Hall, was Brazilian. She was a folk singer from Chicago. Sergio Mendes discovered her at a charity benefit. Can you think of a time when doing good really paid off for you?  Well this may not fit the criteria,    but it came to mind...  when I was 15 I had and had had a huge crush on Robert Fuller...

My mother worked at   GC Murphy's at the mall  near our home,   and she called me to tell me to hurry down there  and get the surprise of my life... I did  and  there sitting in a booth  was  the  manager, my mom and head buyer, and  Robert Fuller  who was in town doing a tour national tour  with some group...  They had stopped in that afternoon to  the new mall in town.  He  greeted me so  graciously and asked if I'd like to tour the mall with him and point out my favorite spots..  Oh, my goodness.  We strolled the mall  for  about  an hour and  when it was over he kissed me on the cheek.. I have never really gotten over it!!

8) In 1968, when this record was popular, Pierre Trudeau became Prime Minister of Canada. Today his son holds that office. When did you most recently visit our neighbor to the north?
ever had the opportunity

from our Hostess!
Hi! I'm your host Bev Sykes of the blog "Funny the World". . Welcome to Sunday Stealing. This feature originated and published on WTIT: The Blog. Here we will steal all types of questions from every corner of the blogosphere. Our promise to you is that we will work hard to find the most interesting and intelligent questions. (Past hosts include: Our first - Judd Corizan, Mr. L, Kwizgiver and Bud) Cheers to all of us thieves!

I just learned that March 6 was was National Oreo Cookie day, so in honor, here are some cookie questions
1. Do you eat Oreos?
Well, when Hubs found out last week about Oreo day he promptly ran out and bought us a package...  hadn't had any in years..  We still  them  so we are  miserly  doling them out!!!!  Um, UM, good!!!

2. If you eat Oreos, which are your favorite – original, double stuff, golden original, golden double stuff, Oreo brownies, Oreo ice cream?
definitely, original...  If it's not broken ,  why fix it?!

3. Do you twist your Oreos apart?
I used to,  but  that is too much trouble at this age...  I just  bite right in!!!

4. Are you able to pass by a plate of cookies and not take one or are you a bit of a 'Cookie Monster'?
I might sneak one,  but  I'm not a monster,  maybe just an ogre over cookies.

5. Tell us about your favorite cookie. Crunchy, soft, chewy, crumbly, other?I prefer   soft and chewy.. like those soft chewy   ginger cookie,  or  chocolate chip ones!!!

6. Have your tastes changed since you were a kid?
Yes,  I  love Chinese food now..  of course, all that we had available was  Chow mien in a can.  Yuck!!!

7. Enquiring minds want to know if you are a dunker and, if so, do you dunk in milk, coffee, or tea?I only dunk  Biscotti in my coffee!

8. It is that time of year and they are selling them on every corner and in front of every store! Do you buy Girl Scout cookies and if you do, which is your favorite? Used to love them,  but  will not support the group now that they have become so  political and  support things  we do not.

9. Raw cookie dough. Yay or Nay?
NAY!

10. Do you like cookies with filling?
Yes.

11. Do you prefer organic cookies?
Not necessarily..  I think some   organic is over the top,,  I  buy organic    fresh  foods.

Large is like having two!   Better just take one large at a time.

13. Do you like familiar flavours in cookies?
I  do not think I'd like strange  flavors in my cookies.

14. Do you make your own cookies, or buy them?
Both,  especially  with my wee grands!

15. Please tell us something random about your week!!
We  hosted  our first Care group  from our Sunday School class here last night..  We  visited over  Victoria Sponge cake,,  It turned out very well...  and the fellowship  was so  sweet!  I love that group!!

Saturday 9~ Molly Malone

Join in the fun with Sam!
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Molly Malone

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.

1) Are you of Irish descent?

I  am so proud to say I am  part Irish.. My grandmother was a Higgins, from Ireland...

2) Legend has it that the heroine of this week's Irish ballad was a real lass. 17th century birth and burial records confirm that a woman with that name lived in Dublin. Can you think of another song about a real historic figure?

3) Molly sold fish from a cart that she wheeled through the streets. What's the last seafood you ate?
A lovely plate of Irish fish and chips!!!

4) The lyrics tell us that, after her death, her ghost continues to wander the streets of Dublin with her wheel barrow. Do you believe in ghosts?
Well,  I sort of do... I've always  felt there may be a kindly one in our home...  then I recently found out  a young  child, a little girl  got Lyme's disease and died here  long ago..

5) This week's featured band, The Dubliners, are obviously from Dublin. They were introduced to American audiences on The Ed Sullivan Show. Today, Stephen Colbert tapes his show in The Ed Sullivan Theater. Who hosted the last talk show you watched?
Last night  I watched  Tucker Carlson...  not a variety show, though...how about Life, Liberty and Levin.. he has guests each week!

6) Corned beef and cabbage is a traditional St. Patrick's Day dish. Is it a favorite of yours?
I  like it,  but not a favorite...

7) According to Irish legend, leprechauns earned the gold in the pot they guard by repairing shoes. Crazy Sam can't remember the last time she got a pair of shoes repaired. When the heels wear away, she discards the shoes and buys new ones. What about you? Do you get your shoes fixed (either by leprechauns or just by ordinary repairmen)?  I have a lovely pair of  flats  that had  slick soles, so I took them to the  cobbler to have them  re-shod with  rubber  heels.

8) Do you look good in green, the signature color of St. Patrick's Day? Sure do...  But I'd wear it  if I didn't,.  I do not want to be pinched!!!

9) Random question: Did you more recently sneeze or cough? I just sneezed.. well, actually had a sneezing fit!

Friendship Friday

Friendship Friday at Create With Joy

Join the fun here!

Today I'd love to share  what I'm up to tomorrow evening.  Hubs and I are  small group leaders  for our  Sunday School class and we are having a get together  as we just recently  changed the groups  up in our very large class.  SO  many of   these friends have never  really gotten together before..I'm doing a coffee and dessert and  a great time to chat and get to know each other better..  I know I probably shold be doing something green,  but  I am doing something spring!!!
A Victoria Sponge cake..  I've only made one other before and it turned out really  wonderfully!!!It was for  my granddaughter's  4th birthday!
I suppose it is like a very grand  strawberry short cake,  but instead the cake is very light and yummy!!!
I used Mary Berry's recipe from
                                          British Baking Competition!

Mary Berry's perfect Victoria sandwich

Mary Berry's perfect Victoria sandwich
Mary Berry's traditional Victoria sponge cake recipe is a baking classic and a tasty tea-time treat.
Preparation time    30 min
Serves 12

Ingredients
4 free-range eggs
225g/8oz caster sugar, plus a little extra for dusting the finished cake
225g/8oz self-raising flour
2 tsp baking powder
225g/8oz butter at room temperature, plus a little extra to grease the tins
To serve
good-quality strawberry or raspberry jam
whipped double cream (optional)
Method

Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Grease and line two 20cm/8in sandwich tins. Use a piece of baking paper to rub a little butter around the inside of the tins until the sides and base are lightly coated, then line the bottom with a circle of baking paper.

Break the eggs into a large mixing bowl, then add the sugar, flour, baking powder and butter. Mix together until well combined with an electric hand mixer (you can also use a wooden spoon), but be careful not to over mix. Put a damp cloth under your bowl when you’re mixing to stop it moving around. The finished mixture should fall off a spoon easily.

Divide the mixture evenly between the tins: this doesn’t need to be exact, but you can weigh the filled tins if you want to check. Use a spatula to remove all of the mixture from the bowl and gently smooth the surface of the cakes.

Bake the cakes on the middle shelf of the oven for 25 minutes. Check them after 20 minutes. The cakes are done when they’re golden-brown and coming away from the edge of the tins. Press them gently to check – they should be springy to the touch. Set aside to cool in their tins for 5 minutes. Run a palette or rounded butter knife around the inside edge of the tins and carefully turn the cakes out onto a cooling rack.

To assemble the cake, place one cake upside down onto a plate and spread it with plenty of jam. If you want to, you can spread over whipped cream too. Top with the second cake, top-side up. Sprinkle over the caster sugar

A wonderful spring tiime  bake!!!

Just Around the Corner!

“Spring is when you feel like whistling, even with a shoe full of slush.”

— Doug Larson

This pretty much sums up  our lead in to spring!
We have had so much rain  this winter  that the ground continues to be  saturated..  I  wanted to  cut some daffodils, but  I need   waders to get over to them.. Maybe I can tomorrow..

But  with the  spring -like feel to the air,,  it really  makes me want to  get  the house all spruced up!
Enter spring,  and the  heavy dark colors in the living room  call out to me to be lifted.. so out come the  white  afghans  to  subdue the  navies and  maroons.  Last year I  removed the  tapestry for cleaning and    didn't put it back until fall...  But,  I missed it.. so  it will stay and  enjoy the  liveliness of spring and summer!!  Besides it is full of  beautiful springy flowers!!

“The flowers of late winter and early spring occupy places in our hearts well out of proportion to their size.”
— Gertrude S. Wister

To  bring out the  flowery  glory of spring I  happened to be at Pier 1 yesterday  and  found  gorgeous pillows for the  sofa!!!

So Easter Bunny found a home nearby!!

My geneaology table,, actually is  the antique  gateleg table that my grandfather made for his new farmhouse he built   following WWI.  I  like to keep it  vintage looking  in tribute to my  heritage!
Young Lambs by John Clare
The spring is coming by a many signs;
The trays are up, the hedges broken down,
That fenced the haystack, and the remnant shines
Like some old antique fragment weathered brown.
And where suns peep, in every sheltered place,
The little early buttercups unfold
A glittering star or two--till many trace
The edges of the blackthorn clumps in gold.
And then a little lamb bolts up behind
The hill and wags his tail to meet the yoe,
And then another, sheltered from the wind,
Lies all his length as dead--and lets me go
Close bye and never stirs but baking lies,
With legs stretched out as though he could not rise.

Spring time puts such a spark in my giddy up... I have found   a spring in my  step...  a  praise in my heart and a love for   the One true  Creator of all things... Spring is a tribute to His  great majesty.  Tomorrow when we  host  a prayer   vigil in this room,  we will be reminded to  praise  Him for the Beauty of the Earth !
For the beauty of the earth
For the beauty of the skies
For the love
which from our birth
Over and around us lies
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise
For the beauty of the hour
Of the day and of the night
Hill and vale
And tree and flower
Sun and moon and stars of light
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our joy ful hymn of praise
For the joy of human love
Brother, sister, parent, child
Friends on earth
And friends above
For a gentle
Thoughts and mild
For a gentle
Thoughts and mild
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise
For each perfect gift of thine
To our race so freely given
Graces human and divine
Flow'rs of earth and buds of heav'n
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our joy ful hymn of praise

Wednesday Medley Good Samaritan

Hosted by Terri.
----------------------------------------------------------

NATIONAL GOOD SAMARITAN DAY –

March 13

NATIONAL GOOD SAMARITAN DAY – March 13

NATIONAL GOOD SAMARITAN DAY

National Good Samaritan Day is observed on March 13th.  This day is also known as Good Samaritan Involvement Day. This is a day for unselfish actions to help those in need and to celebrate kindness.
The term “good Samaritan” comes from the Bible parable where a Samaritan helped a stranger who had been robbed and beaten and left to die by the side of the road.  The Samaritan not only cleaned the man’s wounds and clothed him, but took him to an inn where he paid for the man’s care.
The term is used today to describe those who perform acts of kindness for those in need, especially those who are strangers.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Make an effort to help someone who is struggling or having a problem. Use #GoodSamaritanDay to post on social media.
------------------------------------------------------
1.  When did someone come to your rescue and can you tell us about it?The very first thing that popped into my mind was  years ago..  When I was probably in my 30's  and had taken my students  on a field trip to Natural Bridge..Of all the silly things to do I  misstepped right off the curb and fell on my knee..  It  hurt like the dickens  and I had gravel all in it..The sweetest thing was my students  grew up that day.. They gathered around to check on me.. One little girl  ran directly inside and got  a hostess  to  come check on me and  bring the first aid..  There I sat on the curb with 26 of the sweetest students showing me love and compassion and hopping to, to do my bidding...    After the initial shock and embarrassment I was fine, if a bit frazzled and   limping, but  I was also glowing with love for those 26 young hearts!!

2.  When did you help someone out of a jam and can you tell us about it?
Again, it was  school related, and years ago,I  and my  friend and carpool    partner  arrived to school early one morning and she  was complaining about not feeling great,,  about mid morning  we met again in  the teachers' rest room and she was crying in her stall..  come to find out  she was having a miscarriage...She did not know she was  pregnant at all. I  jumped into action..  ran out and  told the principal   he'd have to get 2 subs,  and  told  him about my friend  .. the nurse went into her and  they  stayed in the  bathroom awhile. I , thankfully, had  a break as my kids were in the gym, and I got my plans done and  hurried down to my friend's first grade class and got some plans done for her.. and we  got her bundled up and  out the door,  I  took her to the hospital and stayed with her  all day until her husband could get there. We actually ended up  quite  best friends and years later we both adopted our  girls from Korea at the same time!
3.  What are your thoughts on being a good Samaritan?  Some states (like Florida) have even passed Good Samaritan laws so you don't get into trouble with the law for trying to help someone.  I feel much better about helping someone I know mainly because if I were to do something that  ended  up hurting the person  I do not  savor a law suit.  But  it is sad to say  that  does exist to keep us from helping, also, sometimes  criminals use  ploys to   trick the  unsuspecting!
4.  Thursday is National Pi Day.  It's a fun play on the date 3.14.  Will you have some pie to celebrate?  Probably not!
5.  Did you know that Pi is the most studied number in mathematics?  Are you good with numbers?Up to the third and fourth grade level  which are the grades I taught... I am happy with the 4 functions.. after that. not so much!!!
6.  Tell us something random about your week.I am counting the days until something wonderful happens!!!
