Autumn Memories

Not so very long ago  we were  crying the blues  because it was so hot and dry... now as we  proceed through the first week of October,   change is definitely in the air..  With temps that barely  reach the 60's  and cloudy,  gloomy skies... not to mention the threat of  a dangerous  hurricane  heading along our  eastern  coast..  I,  first of all, lift up  all those in harm's way in prayer.. That they find themselves safe and secure and that  the powerful   storm will  relent and turn back asea  before  setting its  sites on  another coastline..  We pray for those in Haiti, Cuba, and  the Bahamas  who are already feeling the wrath of the tempest.  We pray that  aid will be  fast and  productive  in  restoring that which has been lost,  and we pray just as  I have heard  many times today on the weather channel that they predict for the worst and hope for the best.. so that  the best is yet to come.
It is  times like this that  home holds a special meaning... that  autumn in the home  offers a warmth and comfort that helps to bind up our  concerns and leaves a hopeful spirit within us..

There is a cosy feeling  to  an  autumn room that  draws you in..perhaps to pick up that  great book and   curl up  with a cup of tea  and  dive into historical  drama  leaving the present drama  far behind.
Or just to walk room to room through  an autumn house and   allow the  warm colors to embrace you   with  their love .. for me they  conjure up wonderful memories of other autumns.
As I pass  through to the dining room   I am reminded of the autumn that  my soon to be  Son in Law  gave us  that gorgeous wall curio that houses  meaningful tokens of our family...
I remember the  sweet autumn my dear mother  gave me  the  pewter tea pot  that is so very dear to me.
I even  remember just this  autumn  when my  precious  Mr. Fox  cunningly charmed his way into  my heart  and into my shopping basket ... I know we will together create many more memories throughout the coming seasons.
Even the sunroom  with that  amazing table scarf I found a few autumns ago on our trip to Kennebuckport, Me... such a wonderful vacation.. our first  trip to a New England autumn!
Autumn is a season of remembrance and  rest...  as  the old year  is beginning to wind down and    go into its dormant stage... Perhaps that is why the colors of fall are so  dramatic and  warm.. reflective of  wonderful days of yore and  the deep meaning they hold for us!!

October Surprise

I  do not celebrate Halloween... but I certainly love October... I loved  decorating my classroom with  golden moons and  cats  caterwauling on fences,  I loved   fodder shocks and pumpkins... and  going to see  my dad  over the years after he retired in the country I loved arriving to see what October surprises he had created...living there he had access to all kinds of autumnal farm items..  bales of straw...   corn shocks.. you name it. and he usually had some kind of  scarecrow  that he created out of his old farm clothing... he had such a tender, merry heart.

Very reminiscent of his handwork!  Found online..
So I guess I would like to share my October surprise...
the fall fairy has  come and sprinked  a bit of  autumn around the house..

I exchanged  my  autumn arrangement  seen now on the sideboard

for my pumpkin pie  pumpkin  who doesnt know it yet,  but its days are numbered!!  hehehehehe
I am using my black transferware... by Johnson Brothers....
because they go so well with my   Thanksgiving dessert plates
Yes,  in November  my  decor will only require a bit of tweaking!
I love to use my  antlers  that I have been collecting the past couple of seasons...

This year I added the smaller  antler  wrapped votives...  all of which I find at Pier One ...
Continuing into the parlor...  I  see the seasonal tree is decked out for fall...

as well as,  the mantel..

wait.. what have we here....   an uninvited guest it seems...
Welcome , little fellow...
so enticed by the  harvest table..my little omnivore   couldn't help  but hop up there to glean and nibble! You seem to  be polite enough to stay!

Just Got Started on a Theme

Yesterday I had the extreme delight to host a  mini birthday party for my husband's cousin's  grandson who was visiting with his sister  from the Outer Banks, NC..
We only really had  time for  cookies and ice cream,  but  I baked the most delectable  chocolate chip  cookies  and the house smelled heavenly when they arrived!
My sunflower  bouquet was still looking  nice so  I felt the need to  redo the  table  to highlight their  awesome  golden color!
And, if truth be told, I was  mightily inspired by the September issue of Victoria Magazine with their radiant autumn hues  against the blue transferware. And I am  so glad I did put this  beginning of my  early fall  table together because our weather suddenly  dropped from 90 degree days to  a  very pleasant 72 degrees!  Hahaha!
I  was pleased as well that when I took these photos the  flash  fired and   the  warm  tones of color  seem to pop off the page.

Since we were only serving  cookies and ice cream I was using the dessert plates and  dishes from my collection...  a mix-matched  collection in blue...
I love how the sunflowers  sing against the   deep  tones in the paisley cloth!
I was so touched when  young Lauren reached forward to touch the sunflowers and asked.. "Are these real?"  I smiled and nodded and she said,  "I want some real flowers!"  Even young  Austin gingerly  reached out and  softly fingered the petals... so  precious to  see  our youth  realize the quality of  the  authentic!
Accent blues and  gold  mark the change on the hutch
I had my daughter's  teen scrapbook out for the kids to  peruse so they could get to know her as their peer... even though she now is twice their age!
umm, chcocoalte  in  dark and white.. the cookies  in dark and the bars in white....  tasting all the better with  a dollop of Vanilla with Caramel Gelato by Breyer's!
I am inspired now to  begin a  much grander  centerpiece in  bold  autumn with blue using  the items I have in storage... as per the  gorgeous arrangements I saw online today on Pier One..
but more along these lines but much more  russet  thrown in for good measure...

or staging blue and white.. with  autumn through in as well.. but that  will be a mind game for me for some time...
But, don't you love blue with  the  rich colors of fall??!!?

Birdie Style

IN my previous post I spoke of the massive yard sale   that was held by  a wonderful church family  to raise money for their  dear grandson who has  reversible leukemia, but the  3 years of treatments  is   not only very   on the 6 year old but also the family finances...  thankfully, it was hugely successful, and I found a few treasures as well...  I found that  fabulous  pink tea  sign, but I also found a  sweet  vase   that  reminds me of my dear  little Birdie!..

I    love this  lovely celadon color...,  so while I   thinking of  Birdie,,  I thought Id  share  just

how  precious she is and how she is growing...
What a sweetheart!!!
So   I continue to  create Birdie vignettes around the house   because she and her dear mommie   occupy so much of our hearts!!!
I thought Id share this next item so that Amanda can  show her  family  ....  recently  as we visited in the home of  our aunt who is downsizing and  preparing to  move into a smaller place, she gave  Amanda this gorgeous painting  that  reminds  Amanda so much of her many times of visiting her beautiful country home...  She had a huge poppy garden  in her side yard...

It will be  fabulous  come  late summer when we can    take this to her   and  get to  see our  dear ones in person once again!

Savvy Southern Style
Tonight I am joining Kim at Savvy Southern Style for Wow Me  Wednesday!

 photo 464be23b-e45c-4faa-82c8-ec508f29643b_zps8bd5dbba.jpg
I have just returned from  Boston   where we visited  with our daughter and granddaughter....   what a blessed  visit..  our lil Birdie is 4 months old this week..  and she is such a  sweetheart..

during our visit we  started the cutest project for Birdie's room...
this
Bird Mobile
mobile is  so appropriate for   her   room and we  wanted to   have  multicolored birds   just as shown....
at first  we thought  we'd like to downsize the pattern
but it was very difficult to turn and to stuff, so  we ditched that and  really liked the origial  size, after all.
So  we shopped and planned    then I set about   teaching  Amanda  various   stitches and   had  a few  sewing lessons  before we  began...

by alternating  bird body fabric with  contrasting   bird bottoms. we  created some  very   cute birdies!
