Christmas is Past

It was a great Christmas  starting in September as  we choir members  worked  so many extra hours in preparation for the Christmas pageant.. which was  held the second  weekend of the month...  other weekends  hubs and I  travelled with a group to Thomas Road  Christmas Specatacular... which   truly lived up to its name.
Our Sunday School class  dined for the Sunday brunch at the  msot swanky and festive  spot in town..

We got to  facetime with our  family several times.. hoping each time  to get to see  Doodle Bug take her first step and we did  this last time.. just yesterday..  But since we  were  with them in November  we didnt go  for  Christmas  so it was just the two of us for the holiday.
Oh, I planned a couple of  great   dinner parties  for special friends  but alas,  we both came down with the flu and  had to cancel  them  both..  even the  postponed date  fizzled, as one of the guests  now  has the crud...   so  this past week of December    has been  quiet and contemplative...
which for me  has been a needed  time.. I mean  my dear parents

celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2014...  although they didnt get to spend any part of the day together.... for  both  were  doing  very poorly in separate nursing facilities.  Dad was 95  and mom was 91.  Dad  finally gave up his fight December 13th, 2014  and mom  continued her  struggle    until  December  27, 2015.  I really didnt   have much time to mourn either of them.. everyone  told me  I appeared so  strong and  brave.. but it was only because our dearest daughter  was  with us  to hold me up  in the physical and the  rest I  gave to  the Lord.  Being the only child and  executor  there was much to be done  and I threw myself into  the tasks at hand. Come  December  2015  we were  excited because our second granddaughter, Doodle Bug was  about to be born...coming in  a week late,  she was born on the 27th...  God redeemed that day for us...and  hubs and I were  miles away from home  revelling  with our  kids..  for a month..  So Christmas  came and went  bringing happiness and cheer..
But this Christmas  was something else...  it all  came crashing down on me...   I tear up even now  with the thoughts  that have   beset me... Oh, not  dreary thoughts, not at all..  just wonderful happy memories of past Christmases... both mom and dad loved  Christmas so and  gave everything they  had  physically  to  make each one special...  even up  til they had to give up housekeeping.  Even  with the  most glorious of memories  the sentimentalist in me   comes out and I  cry  and ache  for  mom and dad...  I know theya re in heaven adn I truly would never want them back in the  shape they were in... I dont even like to remember them that way...   but the little girl in me  cries for  momma's arms and  daddy's lap... and  after a little while I praise the Lord  that I had  and have such an amazing family  I am  truly blessed...  and this has been a  blessed Christmas!

Remembering our Traditions at Christmas

 A Christmas Re-post

All through the  years  family has played  the best part of  all  Christmas  plans....  until   the Lord called my grandparents home  Christmas meant getting together with the whole clan on both sides of the family...  The main event at both  farms  was  the  Christmas dinner  at my mom's folks  and the Christmas Supper at dad's....  by the end of the day  we were  completely  stuffed to the  brim... both full of  Christmas joy, fellowship, love, and  more  food that a  body should even  ever consider consuming!.   Then   Christmas reverts to  my   mom and dad's  home in the country  and by that time   we had our  wee Amanda...   and the tradition  continued   with   great  food and    to  replace the hordes of  cousins, aunts and uncles,  Mom always  invited  the neighboring countryside in for  a Christmas Eve Open House, then gift opening  took place on Christmas Eve after the party....  seems strange to me now...It wasnt until   Amanda  was  a teen  that  I got    to determine  our  own family's tradition... that  we actually  were  in our own home  over  the Christmas  celebration.  I broke all previous tradition   and  decided  that  we would open gifts  on Christmas Day..
Christmas Eve  we would  always go to the  Christmas Eve service  at our church...  and  center ourselves over the true meaning of Christmas,  reading scripture and singing carols around the piano.
On Christmas morning  we traditionally  have our  festive Christmas brunch...
Our  favorite  Christmas morning delights are the  Cranberry  walnut Scones

Our   lovely Amanda  loves to bake them   lately  which is a huge help   on Christmas morning
I love to whip  up  our  Christmas    quiche   each year... we usually bake 2 and  eat on it  all day long!!!!

Brandied fruit  rounds  out the menu  for Christmas morning...   and then we   head to the  parlor and open  the gifts!!!

Who is two   and  a few months old  but  absolutely brilliant in every way...  She can sing  several Christmas carols straight through to the end!

THen this morning well before daylight  we  knew something wonderful was  beginning to happen...
Suddenly  our daughter  was telling us it was time.. and  she and her  hubby left in the car leaving us with very specific directions to follow for the next few days....
THen    just a couple hours later  we got the call....
our second granddaughter  was born...  Birdie is so excited to be a big sister!!!!...  THis is the very best   Christmas ever....  Because of course  Christmas is all about love and  family.

Countdown to Christmas

To return to Sandra's Blogmas,  click here!

When Amanda was a wee little girl, we used to  use advent calendars..
I loved these   once I learned of them the year we lived in Germany... I started out incorporating them into my Christmas  preparations   when I taught 3rd grade...  then,  once Amanda came along,  it was a fun way to anticipate,
but  as my faith grew,  advent  took on  deeper meaning in my  life and  I spent  time preparing  the advent  season through spiritual  readings and  activities.

Last year  our family lit the advent candle at church on Christmas Eve!
Me  The purpose of the Advent celebration is to draw our gaze toward God’s promise of salvation – the Lord Jesus Christ.  In His life, death and resurrection Christ has brought us hope, peace, joy and love; wrought in our hearts through God’s saving grace.  As Christians, advent helps us affirm that Christ has come, that He is now present in the hearts of all believers and will come again in power.  The fifth candle of the Advent wreath is traditionally called the Christ candle.  The central location of the candle reminds us that His incarnation is the central truth of the season.  Christ has brought life and light to our darkened world.
We rejoice and worship Christ, our Savior and King!

“O, light of the world, overcome the darkness of our lives with the light of your eternal presence.  You are our hope and our salvation.  By faith we welcome you into our hearts.  Amen”

5th Candle of Advent - the Christ Candle
1. Introduction   Lynn
Please introduce your family, including the names and ages of your children and how long you have been a member at our church.
2. Explanation of the Advent candle
ME:  The purpose of the Advent celebration is to draw our gaze toward God’s promise of salvation – the Lord Jesus Christ.

3. Scripture      John 1:1-5, 9-13  Amanda
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.  In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.   The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.  He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.  But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Tonight, let us celebrate the salvation we have been given in Christ.

4. Prayer   Lynn
Ask the congregation to join you in prayer…in your own words…thanking Him for this special season and for the gracious salvation that we have received in Christ…ending with:

O, light of the world, overcome the darkness of our lives with the light of your eternal presence.  You are our hope and our salvation.  By faith we welcome you into our hearts.  Amen”

Sadly,  in the past few years, with my ailing parents,   the time hasnt been available to  do much at all in preparing for the  birth child...   today actually marks the one year anniversary  of  dad's  passing...  oddly, enough my mother  so  frail.... and  so  very   frail,  fell and  broke her arm early Wedensday morning.   It was probably the worst break  one can have,  splintered   clean through from shoulder to elbow, and  she isnt a candidate for surgery....  so  the  wrappings  are  very unstable and tenuous.  her welfare and  care even though  in a nursing home,  are tantamount to me  now.
So  in  anticipation of the  most  wondrous season of the year,  I am  haphazardly just trying to get  the  important things done  inbetween  the  madhouse  of my  hectic  schedule.  My husband is  halfway through the project  of  painting this room  in which I am sitting.  a fresh  icy blue, painted over a deep,  deep teal   that Amanda  loved as a teenager...  requires  a second coat!   Yes, I did say  blue, ice blue,  for  our  dearest lil Birdie...I love the ice  blue  for  a sweet lil Princess!  I envision  a  very  sweet  room for her  someday,  but alas,  for now   we have less than a week to get    it  finished and  put back together. Meanwhile, every other room upstairs is   topsy turvy with all the  stuff  from  the  painted room  piled helter skelter here and there.  Thankfully, downstairs  is  almost ready for Christmas...  but nothing is wrapped,  the larder is bare, with no real list  for shopping  .....  my mind is unable to think that far in advance.  My  kids will be here  in 5 days  (praise the Lord!)...  and   I pray that   sometime  between now and then  a miracle will happen. That is all I  can say at this time.

Favorite Christmas Movies

Sandra of Diary of a Stay At Home Mom has a delightful December meme going on through the month celebrating the joys of Christmas.
Well, this all depends on whether  we're talking old classics  or  new hallmarks, because I adore them all.
My alltime favorite classic, of course

A close second is  this wonderful  film!  Love the cast so much!

For more modern films.  my most memorable ones are  these.. I could watch this one over and over.

One  I only saw once  but cant   get it out of my heart. is

  and  Christmas isnt complete without

What Christmas Means to Me!

Sandra of  Diary of a Stay At Home Mom  has a  delightful December  meme  going on  through the month  celebrating   the joys of Christmas

Christmas is my absolute  favorite  season of the year.  I  can hardly wait until Thanksgiving is over to start decorating the house.  I actually start  playing the music    just as  the  weather starts to get a bit nippy, usually  around mid November... because  I  am  such a really olde fashioned gal,  I enjoy  Olde English  carols, so my husband   doesnt get too tired of  Christmas  before it's time!

Christmas is a time of deep reflection for me.  I love to sit  in the   parlor  enjoying the   lights of the tree and  a  cosy fire,  cocoa in hand    and   recounting all the    wonderful gifts of life, family, home, and  goodwill  with which we are  blessed.   In my heart I celebrate the  advent with each new  lighting of the  candle  for that week..   ever thankful for the redemptive  gift  of  Christ  sent to  us  in His mercy   toward us..
Christmas  is   the time when  love abounds   in so many ways..  I love  the  effervescence  of it in the market place as the spirit of Christmas  flows from person to person that  you meet.  I  love   to  be a conduit of that  spirit  wherever I go.. I love to dress up in festive colors and  spread  the cheer  in manner   and in presence,  because we have  His presence  within us!
I love  the trappings of Christmas....  the lights, the  trimmings,  the greens  of the  garlands and wreaths  that I so  rapturously  mulled through  at the downtown  market  last Saturday...
the smells of fresh cut pine and cedar...  the festival  atmosphere of  shoppers  in  the  quaint  shops  on the Market..  I love    the   present  buying for my family....  picking out the  special gifts for  each one...  and  now that our  lil Birdie is  15 months old and scampering around the house,   I love  trying to decorate  "grammy's"  house   with  things at her level that will be   just fine for her  precious  hands  to  grab hold of and  explore.  I love it all...  Christmas is a  feeling of the heart   all   bound up in love and  good   things from  on high....  if you  have  a Christ- centered  heart, you have the freedom to  enjoy Santa and His reindeer, too!    This  post put a huge smile  on my face!!!!  Now gotta go and  do something  Christmassy right now!!!

Christmas  is   probably  my favorite time of year.... besides \ the excitement of Advent, for sure,  but, also,  because  of   family, especially,  now when   family is more and more  spread  apart...therefore,   it is my delight to  pull out all the stops at Christmas!
I started blogging in 2008 and this was  my first digital Christmas

looks  like we were all set for the  Christmas Eve  gathering.

The next year the   Christmas  breakfast   was   held  in the dining room! SO great to have my mom and dad with us...   regretfully, they  wont  be  with us  this year...  They
are  both  bedfast now!

Dont you like to mix it up?  I do.. and in 2010   the Snow theme   was   enhanced with  a  snowy evening...   so we had  our Christmas Eve  in the sunroom!

Last year was the last year we'd all  be together...  this year  we'll be  celebrating a  bit here and yonder as we take  Christmas to  2  separate nursing facilities...   but  I am determined to make this Christmas just as festive as I can...  because this year,  we  are celebrating with our new granddaughter, Birdie!!!!
