Skywatch Friday

Skywatch Friday

This was an historic week with the 2024  Solar Eclipse.  We live in the mid Atlantic area of the country and experience an 85 % totality. Just like 7 years ago, hubs and I enjoyed sitting out on our porch to evaluate how much darker the area became. The problem with this year is that it was mostly cloudy in our area.

The first photo below was taken at the moment the moon began its trek across the sun.

The bottom photo was taken at 85% totality.  You can see how the clouds did affect things,
But that gloomy, eerie affect is defintely seen!

Skywatch Friday

Plockton , a northwestern Scottish sea coast town

I am remembering a beautiful area where we stayed in Scotland  ….we wanted to have easy access to the Isle of Skye, so we stayed in a fabulous manor house known as Duncraig Castle which was nearby the coastal town of Plockton!

What a fabulous place to stay. We were there two nights and being a Bed and Breakfast, the most beautiful breakfast was included. It was hard to leave our accommodations, but the Isle was calling us.  I shared about being at the Old Man of Storr last week.. When we left there we had our granddaughters with us to take to dinner at the town of Plockton, but the further we drove the stormier it became!  The clouds really filled in and lowered. we knew we were in for some rain, at least!

The Plockton peninsula is so delightful!   The terrain is magical!
The town itself  is built close up to the quayside.  The road , considered Main Street , I suppose, is a one lane road with cars parked along the sidewalks.
There was no available parking out front of the Plockton Hotel where we had our dinner reservation, so we parked down where the fishermen park when they embark to sea!  And the sky opened up in earnest.
We ran for it..  arriving to our pub-like accommodation like a few drowned rats!
                                       But it sure was fun!

Skywatch Friday Road to Skye

Skywatch Friday

I have been sharing some photos   of the magnificent    skies  we enjoyed on our Scotland this past July.  One of the most  wonderful  things we did  was actually on my birthday as we travelled from Oban north ,  stopped  to  ride the train across the   Glen Finnan Viaduct  and lunch at  Mallaig, a seacoast town,,  then travel  on  north   to  the edge of  the mainland where you  take the bridge to the Isle of Skye.  But right  before you get there you come to my absolute favorite site..

Being so far north  the  light was still with us even though it was almost 9 pm here.I was delighted to see Eilean Donan  Castle  at dusk with the  lights  shining on it..  The  angry sky threatened rain,  but it held off until we arrived at our  destination!

The midges were so bad here due to that swampy   area  we  couldn't hang around  too long!!!  Next  time   I will be sharing about the  castle where we  stayed  while we were  visiting Skye!  Thankfully,  this rain    seemed to wash away the threat of  more rain and much of our trip then was sunny skies!!!

Sky watch Friday

 Skywatch Friday!

Cloudy day over the western sea coast town of Oban. These photos were taken from our apartment window as we watched the ferry leave port heading out to the Hebrides Islands. Ferries ran rain or shine.

Skywatch Friday

I really enjoy  sharing on Skywatch Friday!

On our first day of travel after  visiting  Glasgow,    we    headed north on the Great Western Highland Road. .  The views  were  amazing,  and especially as we  approached and   drove along the length of  Loch Lomond!    Yes, we were on the high road to Loch Lomond and  my heart was singing  with great glee!

If this was a panorama view it would include  what was just around the  corner of the shot.

Kilchurn Castle on the banks of Loch Awe!  The clouds  were trying
to break through   to clear skies,  but,  actually,  I loved the  clouds
on this part of our  journey!

Skywatch Friday

It is my pleasure to come back to Skywatch.  I have been away for  some time..    but  I have  what I think are some  wonderful  new   photos  to share  over the next weeks..   so  here is this week's  photo.

In July 6 of us family members boarded   an Icelandair  plane  for  Glasgow, Scotland.  It was  absolutely thrilling to approach Glasgow on that early  July morning!  The day promised to be  amazing!

Those did turn out  to be fair weather clouds  and   they  framed  the  patchwork  landscape of  the foothills of the Highlands!
