Who has Time?? Not me! But If I Cudda Wudda!

I  am so inspired by the    stacked pumpkin  look!
outdoor fall decor
I  have searched high and low for just the  right  flat pumpkins,  but never  found any   that   looked   unblemished  in our area....   saw  some in  Boston area  last week,,, but we didnt have time to stop and   go through them!
Pumpkin Topiary
I had my planter  all picked out,,, you know the one  with the  dying  angel wing  begonias in it....
I was  just going to  ask Lynn to move it around to the front porch in readiness,   but,,,   then  I ran out of time....   no time!
I   did   buy the perfect  white pumpkin I  planned to  place on the  top of my  gorgeous    arrangement  and was  collecting the  mosses and leaves to     finish off the total look...
but alas... it just never came together....I ran out of time....life  has a way of getting in the way...   not dont get me wrong...   wonderful   things of life...
traveling 15  hours away   to see  my precious daughter and meet  our new  granddaughter  for the first time....

coming home   just time to    laundry my clothes and repack for   an awesome week long   lake house retreat with  my  BFF's and Prayer Sistas!
So IM not  complaining....  I just can't spare the time   this year   to stack pumpkins...   it is a cute  idea though!
Sunday is the day to share

Remembering Times With Momma

Thursday Favorite Things

Katherine hosts this  blog hop each week   where  participants  share  their favorite things....   and  at this time of year  my favorite thing is  remembering   special times with
my family....     times  we got together  with my parents....   my mom.....
My parents  are in Assisted Living now and  times  together  are  so limited  by  time, space, and  ability....
Mothers day collage
I am so thankful that I still have both my parents...  Dad at 93 and Mom a t 89...     they are doing  pretty well considering....    but this change  takes its toll on them....   and our family is  so  spread apart....  our daughter and son-in law  live so far away,   that  great  family time together  becomes quite a challenge...   and  our family is a small one.. I being an only child  with one child....      but when we do get together  we  enjoy one another so much....

Mother’s Hands

Clasping me to her breast, I snuggled ever closer,
Completely safe in her warm embrace.

Reaching out for me as I toddled ever forward
Tucking my hand into her’s with pride and grace.

Clapping hands to ‘Three men in a Tub, rub-a-dub-dub,”
Hands that pulled me close for a rollicking hug, a giggle,  a sigh,
Intimacy with mommy, when I was five.

Splaying fingers through the dirt, ridding weeds,
Training mine to sow some seeds.

Peeling apples in one long peel, peeling ‘taters’ and ‘tomaters’,
Always peeling something that would eventually delight.

Feeding laundry through the rollers of the back porch washer,
Pinning sheets and towels on the line to dry.

Folding heaps and heaps of linens, ironing, starching, every day
Taking care of business was grueling work, with very little play.

Pinning patterns to the fabric, pinning darts here, just right,
Pinning hems and laces, designing clothes for me at night.

Traipsing fingers  along the keys, I loved to hear God’s melodies, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Trust and Obey: so many hymns etched on my heart through the tunes that she’d play.

Loving touches only she could minister; a cool hand on my fevered brow,
a silent tummy rub when I felt ill.

An understanding pat upon on a troubled shoulder,
A gentle hug when feelings smoldered.

Making late night goodies for dad and for me,
Sometimes orange and cinnamon buns straight from an oven warm

Sometimes it was popcorn all buttery and fresh,
But always it was homemade things she’d learned growing up on the farm.

Loving hands that tucked me into bed each night,
Then folded into prayer, teaching me to trust in God
To give Him all my cares.

Holding her Bible in deep, reverent study,
Demonstrating her need to know more of Her Lord.

Leading her study group on Sunday morning
Pointing out truths, a divine smorgasboard.

All of these things done by the power within her
Sharing God’s love deep within her He’d poured.

When I was growing older we’d place our hands before us.
I’d marvel how wondrously they were alike: a fine treasure,
I declared, “I have my mother’s hands” with pride and pleasure.

That thought always spurred me on to demonstrate the memory
Through the service of my own hands -the bliss her hands had always wrought.

Whenever through the hard tasks I trod to make a house a home,
My hands have played the integral part- shadows of mother’s hands I’ve known.

Now whene’er we place our hands before us I almost shudder at what I see. Gnarly, withered, and arthritic, fingers worn are they,
yet they reach out for mine in love’s pure grasp display.

I am just so glad that I still can cling to those hands and with our heads bent close, recount the tales of old, of days gone by, memories cherished in the heart!.

Proverbs 31:31 Give her the reward she has earned,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Happy Birthday

Today is Lynn's  birthday...and I  had been looking forward   way before  his retirement  to taking him  for luncheon at  the White Oak Tavern....   This is  a favorite  of all of  my  gal pals   but  I know that  manly men   could enjoy  good  food and lovely ambiance as well....But with one thing or another  we just hadn't   had time or any opportunity to go...   and not that we had to  use it,  our  diner's club coupon for the Tavern  was expiring  this weekend... so  I set my mind to  getting him there today!
Photobucket
Of course, the coldest day of the season  with  threat of sleet and  worse   loomed    before us,  but  all in all,   the prospect of a   lovely afternoon  with my sweetheart  at a favorite destination   urged  me on!
Photobucket
Photobucket
Today there was a cozy fire in the grate and we  were seated  right next to the fireplace  just the place to  knock off the  damp chill..
Photobucket

Lynn had the honors of choosing our tea for the day  ... wild blueberry  set to steep for the full five minutes...
Photobucket
Photobucket
but I  took  control of the ordering  and  we  both enjoyed the  cranberry almondine  chicken salad topped with  pecans served with  fresh baked bread  ready for dipping in the marvelously tangy balsamic vinaigrette..
Photobucket
We gals were told  by the proprietor that this  signature chicken salad has over 15 ingredients  that makes it  so  scrumptious...   all I know is it is perfection..
 Photobucket
and Lynn didnt waste any time  plunging right in  up to his  shirt sleeves....    it was hard there for a while to remember to chat...but  after a while it as just lovely to  sit and  enjoy our   cups of  warm  tea
Photobucket
and soak in the  environs....  gloriously  The Celtic Women    serenaded us   the while,  it  was  like  being enveloped in a  great  bear hug of love and  contentment!
It was a very happy birthday!

Our Magnificent Outing

Today we had such a fun  ride up in to the  mountains  to  the quaint country town of Floyd, Virginia.  We  met  Dottie at her  gorgeous home  on the way...  then we  were    hit the road!

Photobucket
Photobucket
Our mission was to  visit the local hardware and  see about purchasing a Foley food mill,,,   but  alas,  the price was about double what I wanted to pay....
Photobucket
but  we enjoyed our luncheon at the Odd Fellow's Hall.
Photobucket
I love how  we  drank our water from  canning jars...
I had a quesadilla  and  Dottie  had a taco..
Photobucket
Photobucket
The stage nearby was  begging for  an entertainer...   but alas     neither of us  were prepared to sing today....
We stopped in at the local fabric  shop and  we each   had a blast  purchasing   the perfect   items for our  perspective nests.  I bought table cloth fabric... as usual.
Then we were  driving back  towards home  but first stopped in at the  roadside market..
Photobucket
known for its hand dipped creamery ice cream..   I bought a blue pumpkin and  and we sat on the wrap around porch  as we  enjoyed our  cones....
Photobucket
The  chickens across the road  performed dutifully for us...   it  was  quite entertaining

Photobucket
   Photobucket
Soon we were  heading back down the mountain  with  dreams of  how we  would  create new   items for our home and with  very  happy  tummies...  for me  it was such a grand  day for sharing with my friend and enjoying  God's magnificent  world  in autumn.

Three or more Tuesday

Photobucket

Visit Tam at The Gypsy's Corner for more TOMT..

Today for my Three or More Tuesday I would like to share about my surprise birthday party last night... well, I actually turn 60 day after tomorrow, which fact, helped in keeping this event a complete surprise.... I thought Lynn was just taking us and my parents out for dinner.

We left home at abut 4:20 and picked up mom and dad then we proceeded to drive all around town looking for a place to eat for the next hour.... when we arrived in the next county I should have had my suspicions, but even then , I just had no idea!! Eventually, we pulled in to Amanda's in-laws driveway.... and my expectations suddenly soared,,,

because by this time I was becoming quite hopeful for an amazing repast..... and I was not to be disappointed!!!

Photobucket
To say that this event was well thought out and executed is just plain lame.... To know our hostess, Jan, you must know that her flair for creating themed parties is nationally acclaimed.... her renown for party planning stretches half way across America and probably beyond....my party took us on a trek around the world in commemoration of my life and family!!!.. We traveled from my home town... to Europe,, to Asia, and back again.. all in one beautiful festive, delicious evening!!!
Photobucket
To begin every place setting was completely personalized and spectacular...

Photobucket

My place mat was of Williamsburg to celebrate the years I taught Virginia History... Lynn's was of the State Capitol since he is a state employee... Mom's was a rooster... being a Cox she loves to crow... ( no she loves roosters.... HEEHEE) and dad's was the Old Mabry's Mill.. very appropriate!
A close up shot reveals my Korean linen napkin which is a youngster swinging which is a traditional pastime for young ladies.... to remind me of my darling daughter, Amanda!!!

Photobucket

For our appetizer Jan transported us to Europe... with a fabulous German cheese and cracker competing with an English cheese and cracker... Lynn and I lived in Germany the first year of our marriage..and of course, I long to visit the United Kingdom... soon.... as my genealogical roots are calling my name!!! A local apple cider from Botetourt County... my school division..... rounded out the first course.... then we were on to new locales.... with a wisk and fourish Jan changed the setting....

Photobucket
Photobucket
and we were off to Asia... a lovely Korean doll and china plate graced center place.... and Kevin's amazing dinner was served... including Korean Bulgogi, a fabulous asparagus and beef dish, Korean soup, chicken and veggies, and delicious sweet and sour tilapia... yumyum!!!!! All served over a wonderful stir fried rice laden with veggies and delicate spices!! (Note, the beautiful vase commemorating the Hokies as our kids ' Alma mater!!)

Photobucket
You will note an all new place setting and new tone for the festivities.... conversation lulled as we all enjoyed the savory meal.... with each course I was presented a gift bag of goodies which I will share about directly... but whallah!!

Again the scene was transformed... and we returned to America just in time for a patriotic celebration...
Photobucket
Photobucket
with a twist of my beloved Scotland thrown in to make everything just perfect.
Photobucket
Even though our dear friends Sarah and Wally couldn't attend Sarah sent along her marvelous shortbread's for the occasion which served with a German coffee , UMMMMM!! and Jan's wonderful fruited pudding... made for a festive end to a fabulously memorable birthday dinner!!
Photobucket
Photobucket
And since dad's birthday is this month as well....
Photobucket

he got to celebrate, too!!!

So now to the amazing and significant gifts....

My lovely birthday card was completely approrpriate for me.... as I love to enjoy my daily cup of tea and dream about far away places on the moors and highlands of Scotland..

Photobucket
The white bag of gifts sported a tribute to Germany and England...

Pictured here are the gorgeous German napkins, and German chocolate covered butter biscuits... ummmm!,, and some local Apple Butter processed just beyond my school where I taught for 30 years.....Scottish collection of jams and jellies,, and a tin of Highland blend tea...
Other bags featured the following wonders
Photobucket
A Symphony Bar celebrates the talents of our marvelous children Amanda and Joshua, living in Boston,,, there were 2 boxes of Boston Tea Party Tea, as well as some Virginia Hubs peanuts, and Korean stir Fry sauce!
Photobucket

Also in tribute to our kids,, there was a bottle of Cape Cod dressing and a package of Massachusettes cranberries.... each and every delightful article special in the memories each one evoked in such a personalized and symbolic manner.... Well, I did say, Jan is an artistic party planner extraordinaire!!! And this celebration will go down in the annuls of my life as an amazing celebration of life and family... Jan and Kevin... there are no words adequate to express my heart felt delight and wonder for last evening! So I revert to my favorite exclamation!

YAYA!!!!!
