A Hard Day's Night
Welcome to Saturday 9. Hosted by Sam!
1) John Lennon sings that he's been working like a dog. What's the hardest job you've ever had? What made it so difficult?
I responded to a question like this recently., the hardest job I ever had was a two week stint helping my grandfather on his dairy farm. Now I was an only child who lived in the city and grandpa thought I needed toughening up. His 6 daughters worked hard on the farm and the thought a job for me wold be just the thing I needed. So the summer I turned twelve, I spent 2 weeks hoeing the corn field. My first and horrid thought was what about the snakes. Praise God I didn't see any,. But the work was grueling for me. I work up at 5:30 every morning ate a hearty breakfast and headed with grandpa up to the high meadow which was several acres of corn growing in nice straight rows. It was hot and the sun shone heavily down on us as we worked hoe in hand clearing the rows from weeds and piling up a bit of the loamy soil tidily around each stalk. it was a bit of back killing bending over for me, and dirty work for a city girl. grandma rang the lunch bell hours later and we came in for a cooling drink of lemonade and a hearty lunch. Then grandpa set out for the field right on time and I hustled to get to the bathroom and say a pray of deliverance! We worked steadily on this boringly hot, sweating dripping task until 5 pm every week day for the allotted 2 weeks. I was paid 10 dollars for the work... I never spent it but opened my bank account with it. I can say I lived through it, and I had a deeper appreciation for my mother.. but it was the most difficult two weeks of my life! Oh, but it was the first time I ever gleaned any attention form grandpa. On Saturday night he took me to the Cattleman's Association meeting where I got to sit in a smoke filled room with about 20 other farmers and listen to their deliberations. ... then grandpa took me to the grocery store and bought me a brown mule, ( fudge bar) ice cream.
2) Despite the hard work, he likes his life and asks, "So why on earth should I moan?" What's the last thing you complained about? Who were you talking to? I have been having a few chat sessions with a dear friend over a personal situation, shared between us.. (We are both enduring this same predicament). and we have both done our share of complaining. But mainly we are trying to come up with a solution. This has become a great concern of prayer for the both of us!
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

3) John was raised by his Aunt Mimi. She meant well when she told the teen-aged John, "The guitar's all right, but you'll never make a living out of it." What's the worst advice you've ever received? I really cannot think of any.
4) This week's song was cowritten and also sung with Paul McCartney. Paul's father was more supportive of the lads' show business aspirations than Aunt Mimi was, but he still worried that his son wouldn't be able fully support himself as a musician. To please his dad, 17-year-old Paul worked over the Christmas holiday season as the "second man" on a delivery truck. Paul would be the one to hop off the truck and drop off the packages while the driver could keep the motor running and the heat on. Where was the last package you received from? (Extra points if you share what was in it.) The last gift package was from our daughter and was my birthday present form the girls. It was a couple of really great books.. But I have received packages form various clothiers as I am replenishing my fall/winter clothing with a few new items and will purge some that are now too large for me. I received a pair of slacks form Soft Surrounding yesterday and I have some great items coming tomorrow from Christopher and Banks tomorrow! Terrific sale this weekend!
5) After Christmas was over, Dad insisted Paul get a full-time, year-around job. He ended up at a factory, winding heavy coils to be used in electric motors. He hated the work but enjoyed the lunch hours, eating jam sandwiches and, weather permitting, kicking a soccer ball around the yard with his coworkers. What's for lunch at your house today? Well, we got a late start today and are having breakfast for lunch.l French toast and fruit ...yum!
6) In early March 1961, the Beatles accepted a booking to play lunch hour gigs at Liverpool's Cavern Club, and so February 28, after less than two full months, Paul said goodbye to factory work. What's the shortest you ever stayed at a job? As mentioned above 2 weeks! Seemed like 2 years!
7) Enough about these Brits! Labor Day was introduced to celebrate the achievements of the American worker. How many different employers have you had?Three, grandpa, the manager at G.C. Murphy for my seasonal and weekend jobs while I was in HS and College, and Botetourt County Schools for 35 years.
8) This weekend may offer a golden opportunity for napping and sleeping in. Do you snore? Unfortunately, but not like hubby!!!!! YIKES!
9) Labor Day traditionally marks the beginning of the new school year. When she was a kid, Samantha was crazy for her brand new box of 96 Crayola Crayons. It even had a sharpener in the back! What do you remember about preparing to go back to school? If you're an educator, let us know how you get the classroom ready for the kids.
Ive been retired from teaching for 20 years so it is hard to remember everything. Much preparation took place in the mind.. planning the classroom layout, planning curriculum for the first month knowing what and how to tackle each subject for each subset of children based on their ability, planning accountability files, and work folders for each child, creating bulletin boards for each subject as well as welcome back visuals. Preparing welcome back packets for student and parents with information about myself and what to expect. Setting the various corners for learning. the reading corner, math lab, science table, History library, writing/ English corner, etc. That is just a small part getting ready for that first day!
