Tuesday~Finding Joy in Christmas

This time of year most people it seems are looking for joy in Christmas… the man made illusion of Christmas; all the time that goes into planning, the gifts, the food, the parties, the family, the music.  Yes, Christmas has become so deeply entrenched in the trappings of the holiday, the most important element of Christmas, I’m afraid takes a back seat!

Hebrews 1:1-4 addresses this issue straight forwardly.

Long ago, at many times and  in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but  in these last days  he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he  sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

I can break this passage down into several parts to bring it to light!

1. Christ is greater than Christmas because God sent Him to speak to us.

Jesus put on flesh and came down to be with us ,,, He was an exact image of God.  He only did what He saw God doing.  He only said what God said. Jesus is greater than all because He is the revelation of the Word. John 1 says,  Jesus is the WORD.

2. Christ is greater than Christmas because He is heir of all  things!  Every person who ever lived has lived to choose Jesus. Actually, that is our only purpose in life.  Yes, many miss this calling, and sadly, many times we who are Christ’s inheritance have  failed to lead our friends and family in the Way! I, too, am guilty in this!

Psalm 2:8

Ask  me, and I will make the nations your inheritance ,  the ends of the earth your possession.

It is the will of God for all to come to Christ and become part of the family of God!But we are His workmen! The call is on us !

3. Christ is better than Christmas because He is the Creator of all things!  He not only created, but He sustains and  holds His Creation together!  He brings it to its final goal, both globally and personally,  for those who believe! He is the ruler of the world!

Colossians 1:16

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for Him!

4 Christ is better than Christmas  because He perfectly reflects God through His life and words.  He is the perfect expression of the Almighty.

John 14:9

Jesus said to him,

Have I been with you so longand you still don’t  know mePhilip? Whoever  has seen me has seen the FatherHow can you say, ‘Show us the Father!’

5 Christ is greater  than Christmas because He is the perfect sacrifice!

Verse  3 in our Hebrews text says , After making purification for sins, he  sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

What a price, what great love to die on a sinner’s cross to redeem our sins, atone for our shameful acts. As soon as it was time for His last breath on earth, He said, “ It is finished” He had accomplished what he had come to do.   There is NO other Savior who has come to rescue us from death and hell.

6 Christ is greater than Christmas because  of His Title.

We think about that, He has so many names, but this one is very different.  When He was in heaven with God during Creation He had no title.  He actually earned it you might say when He came to earth as God’s own SON  to complete the work of Salvation.   And He completed the second person of the Trinity. Jesus truly  came at Christmas as the Son of God to redeem us from our sins.  He truly was the Messiah!

So it is vital that we all place Christ in the center of our Christmas celebrations.  Don’t just dwell on the trappings.  Serve up instead what Christmas is all about!
