Saturday 9

Hosted by Samantha!

Welcome to Saturday: 9.

Saturday 9: Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey (1971)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The lyrics tell us Paul believes it's going to rain. How's the weather where you are today?  Our area is trying hard to push the last remnants of  Bertha  out .  We've  had   a foot of rain in the last week!

2) Paul sings that he is sorry because he hasn't "done a bloody thing all day." What do you hope to accomplish this weekend?Well,  with a sudden spurt of energy  the last couple of days, I have already accomplished  much, especially  on our main level  and bedrooms..  so that leaves the basement to tackle.. To tell the truth I haven't been down there in a few weeks...    dear hubs has been doing the laundry.   But I  have the storage room to work on..  organize  seasonal decor and  cull through it and  get items for  the yard sale I wrote of this week..  a sale to  help fund a church project. I know I have  a lot of stuff in the basement to get rid of..  not the least is  things  we squirreled away from Amanda's wedding 15 years ago.. nice things..  votives and   various  reception decor items.. can't believe it has been 15 years..

3) He also references butter pie, which is made primarily with potatoes (with onions and, of course, butter). That dish is not popular on this side of the Atlantic. Last time you had potatoes, how were they prepared (baked, mashed, hash browned, french fried ...)?  We ordered  take out  over last weekend  from Red Lobster and  we got  a dinner for two of  fried whiting and fries ..  There were enough  fries for Cox's army.  So we  ate on them  several times this week.. bleh.  Do not show me another fry  for a week of Sundays!

4) Linda McCartney is credited as co-writer and performer on this recording. Paul and Linda were partners in real life, too; married 29 years, they raised four children together. They often said they tried never to spend more than a few hours apart. Do you enjoy a lot of togetherness, or do you value your personal time? Has your experience with Covid19 and quarantine changed how you feel about this?
I really  got   happy  being alone  after I retired in 2003 at age 53, after 30 years of teaching.  I really got much closer to God in my quiet time..Hubs retired in 2011 and even though  I wanted him  home very much, I suddenly  didnt have the  quiet freedom to worship  the way I had  before and I missed it!  And still do..  But  we are so  very close and we depend on each other.. Especially,  me ...He has taken great care of me during this  difficult time of  maladies  during the quarantine .  I couldn’t have endured the shingles and the gout without him!  We have been together in retirement now for 11 years and we do everything together, except he is the one who loves to venture out , mask and all, to get supplies and take care of business!  I am happy to stay in quarantine!

5) Paul and Linda came from very different backgrounds. His family was lower middle class, lived in Liverpool's public housing and received government aid. She grew up in affluent Scarsdale, the daughter of a wealthy theatrical attorney. Do you think it's more important for a couple to share a common background, or to share common interests? I think common interests far exceeds  common background.  Marriage is for the long haul, and there is no guarantee that your lives together will be rosy and uncomplicated.  Common interests would be the agent that binds a couple together in the rough times as well as the sweet, easy times.

6) Paul is known for his work ethic. At age 78, he's still making music and performing live. What's your favorite Paul McCartney song?  After some deliberation I think it would have to be Something!

7) In 1971, when this song was a hit, Bobby Fischer was the world's most famous and highest-rated chess player. Do you play chess?  No.

8) England's Princess Anne turned 21 in 1971. The occasion was commemorated by a formal portrait, taken by celebrated fashion photographer Norman Parkinson. Who took the most recent photo of you? I took a selfie for a Facebook post.  I looked like a deer caught in the headlights!  Deleted it after a short time!

9) Random question: Do you find it more satisfying to work with your hands, or your head?I believe that would be 50/50. I do a lot of Bible Study and contemplation and discussions on theological subjects.  In my personal productivity time here at home I love decorative arts, oil painting.  My younger days I loved playing the piano, and doing needle arts.  Those days have passed.  😐

Friday Fave Five

FFF
Hosted by Susanne!
  • I  hate to bring this up yet again,  but  this entire   quarantine time    has  been a real drain on me..  one health issue after another,  but this week..  I am  beginning to feel like my old self.. I can walk  with little pain,  I can stand up straighter,,  and my energy level is much better
  • One thing that  I am  so thankful for is  our wonderful daughter and her  precious  girls..
who live 7 states away and we haven't seen since Christmas... did something very special  yesterday.
I found a flower box on our porch and it contained not one, but two   bouquets, one from  each  of our  precious granddaughters..

And I was feeling so great today I reworked   the dining room  decor    and  have a brand new mindset  for    moving  through this last month of  spring!

Yesterday,  being the first day I really  was  feeling a spurt of energy,  one chore had been on my mind for  a long time.  I have a  large tub on the floor of my closet where I store  out of season clothing. I needed desperately to    change out my clothing..  but since I  have lost  a bit of weight and  dropped a size   I wanted to get rid of  quite a bit of  clothing that I just never ever wear.. But the thought of it was  grueling!
Yesterday I persevered and got it all  done..  the tub, the drawers  of  3 dressers and  two closets..  I know it sounds like a lot of clothes,  and it was but I filled two huge  leaf bags  with  items for the good will!  YAYAYAYA!
  • Another  means of getting  rid of    a lot of stuff here in our home  is  to prepare for a huge yard sale  to help fund a project at our church. I have been going through linen closets , drawers,  cabinets,  finding lots of  nice things to   share... The next really huge step will be for me to go down in the basement  with a bull dozer..  oh, we need to get really rout it out down there!!!  We had planned on having the sale  earlier this month,  now  it  will be September ,  if things work out!!
  • I cannot wait for  two    orders I've made  to  arrive.  It is  so much fun   buying clothes  knowing it is a size smaller   and I know I will be able to wear these things at least through the season.. then we will think on winter  clothes... as I plan to be down another  20 or more by then .. I am expecting  an order from J Jill...  Love the style  of  J Jill.
Image For Long & Light Printed Cardi from JJill   Image For Pima Ankle-Length Leggings from JJill
I ordered  2  pair of   summer weight leggings, in navy and white  to wear under  short  dresses   and  will  this great  cardi. I have some cute dresses  but too short..  I  do not like my knees!

And I ordered a great book I cannot wait to read!!!

"By exploring ten characteristics of who God is―holy, loving, just, good, merciful, gracious, faithful, patient, truthful, and wise―this book helps us understand who God intends for us to be. Through Christ, the perfect reflection of the image of God, we will discover how God’s own attributes impact how we live, leading to freedom and purpose as we follow his will and are conformed to his image."

Wednesday Hodge Podge

Wednesday Hodge Podge

Hosted by Joyce.

1.  The US of A celebrated Memorial Day this past Monday. Does your family have any military ties? If so, tell us about them. I share this last week,  but I am always proud to share it again!

My grandfather  was  a great carpenter,  and he  served in WWI in France  in the Army Air Corp   helping to maintain   combat planes which were made of  wood and canvas.

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling, closeup

My dad   was a medic  stationed at Letterman  Hospital in San Fransisco during WWII. He also served in  Spokane, Washington,  as  support to the Pacific theater.

My husband served during the Viet Nam war era,  but, thankfully,    was stationed in  West Germany,  under NATO ( North Atlantic Treaty Organization)   in defense of western Europe against the threat of Communist Soviet Union.  Even I, as his dependent, was trained to  be aware of  Soviet operatives. (spies)  His job  there was    the NCO of  the main Post Office  in a large  installation   near   Frankfurt.
Photo taken the spring we married while he was on leave and before I joined him in Germany!

2. Cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, potato chips, mac and cheese, macaroni salad...your favorite BBQ side? How many of these do you make from scratch vs. buying from the deli? I Make all of these from scratch  when I make them.  We love Cole slaw  and chips  with our  BBQ.

3.  I enjoyed asking this question back when the Hodgepodge was a regular thing...Lake Superior State University posts a list each year of words they think should be banished from the Queen's English for misuse, overuse, and/or general uselessness. The 2020 list includes-quid pro quo, artisanal, curated, influencer, literally, I mean, living my best life, mouthful (word used by foodies to describe texture of food in their mouth), chirp (basically an insult, you can read more on the website), jelly (short for jealous), totes (short for totally), vibe, and OK Boomer (internet response from millenial to older generation).

Of the words/phrases listed which would you most like to see 'banned'? Without looking it up,  I'd have to say 'chirp'  and jelly  doesn't sit well with me either.  That OK Boomer  leaves me wth lots of answered questions.  But I'll leave it at that!

4. I'm sure next year's list will be filled with words springing out of this weird season we're all in currently. What word or phrase associated with the Corona would you be happy to hear less often? New Normal  has many  undesirble connotations..   This  thing came upon us so suddenly,  I think I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it.

5.  The month of May wraps up in just a few days. Bid her adieu in ten words or less.  May, I barely knew ye,  don't be such a stranger!

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I just watched the movie Courageous on Tv.  It was so  great..  but  I found my- self  blubbering up and crying several times throughout  it.. I hope its message will resonant with me  for a long time!

Good Old Days

Hosted by Annie!

Welcome to Tuesday 4 begun by Toni Taddeo and
kept in memory of her.
This week's subject is the Good Old Days.

1.Do you know who supplied the voice of Lamb Chop, Hush Puppy and Charlie Horse? It was Shari Lewis according to Reminisce.com.
It was a very popular kids show in the 50's and 60's.
What childhood program meant a lot to you or taught you things you feel were important to you.

I grew up with Captain Kangaroo and I loved him.. I especially loved Mr. Moose and Rabbit!
Bob Keeshan Beloved Mr. Moose and Bunny Rabbit
2. Is there a memory from your past that makes you feel at home, warm and nostalgic? Maybe you would share it with us. Perhaps there is a story your parents told you that brings back good memories. Being an only child with both parents who worked, I was alone a lot of the time.. But I was comfortable being alone. Our neighbors were a great solace to me.. We were all very close and if I ever needed anything all I had to do was call out.. I loved to read.. especially Trixie Beldon and Nancy Drew Mysteries. We had a most com fortable upholstered glider that made into a bed.. I say that to explain it was a nice hefty glider and I loved to lie on it and glide back and forth  while I read. Mom hung wicker shades around the porch for privacy because there were times on hot summer nights we would sleep out there at night. I have so many wonderful memories of reading on that glider on summer days.. there was always just the right amount of breeze. The living room windows would be open and I'd turn the stereo radio on to seranade me. I loved the same golden age standard music my parents loved (1001  Strings playing Moon River, etc).. When my parents moved here in 1997 they had a lovely covered patio and they had that that same glider that had been reupholsterd a couple of times since my youth.. but I would love to go over to visit and lay on that glider and daydream of being home with my books!

3.Dirty Dancing was a big hit movie of the 80's. Mullet hair dos for guys and huge puffy hair for girls was a hallmark of those days.
Did you dance at school dances, Proms, etc? What kind of dancing did you enjoy? I went to 2 high school dances and about 10 dances in college.. I do not remember my style of dancing changing much over those 8 years! And I
have no idea what the name of the dance was.. but I never danced the Twist.. ugh! Speed up to 3:15. we danced various combinations of the below!!
I do seem to remember the Mashed Potatoes and the Frug!

4. Do you think we have passed by the good old days or do you think we will be able to look back and see these as the good old days in the future? Will your kids or grand kids think they were?To tell the truth I think the good old days have come and gone and I cannot think how they will ever be very good again Every generation may feel this way, but, really, today's music is horrid.. not memorable at all like that of earlier generations. And morals and social standards are so low.. I am very glad I lived when I did!

Chore I'm not looking forward to today or this week::
I  am actually  about half way through this very tedious chore.,.. of  tranfering summer and  winter clothing..  I am going through each piece because I have lost so far about  40 pounds and  I have bought some new summer items;    it is time to root out everything that is shabby and  looks    too  large on me.  Yayay~  My closet is so full..  and I depise most of  the  things..

To relax this week, I will::
I may take a  short nap early this afternoon

On my prayer list::

Our president for protection, wisdom, courage, strength of body, clarity

For our government for transparency, truth, justice, and doing the jobs they were sent to do! Guide them in the continuing decisions they need to make to protect the country and our economy.

For this coronavirus to stop in its tracks and not spread any more... Lord, protect the elderly and those in compromised health situations. Protect the health providers and the families where the virus is bringing suffering.  I pray that this week we will begin to see a decline in the number of deaths and the numbers o f healed will increase in Jesus name!.

Thank you for the front line folks who are helping to stem the tide of the virus.   Medical staff, ENt's, janitors, custodians, food providers and servers, truck drivers who are tirelessly trying to g et supplies to those who need them.. any who are on the front lines who face off with the virus on a daily basis! Protect them, Father!
Special prayers for  Hobert, Kohanna, Ellie, who have very special and immediate needs.
The lost in these divers places , that they will realize their need for a savior ans turn to  God through Jesus!
For God's mercy to hover over the earth and give people rest and the forbearance to continue to persevere in their trials and testings!

Saturday 9

Welcome to Saturday 9. K
Hosted by Samantha!
Saturday 9: Battle Hymn of the Republic (1963)

Unfamiliar with Judy Garland's rendition of this week's tune? Hear it here.

Memorial Day is the federal holiday designated to honor American service people who died in battle.

1) On May 30, 1868, President Grant presided over the Memorial Day observance at Arlington National Cemetery. Have you ever visited Arlington Cemetery?  I have  visited there  many years ago, and we toured Lee Mansion.
Arlington National Cemetery – America's Largest Military Cemetery ...  Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial - Wikipedia

2) On Memorial Day, it is customary to fly the flag at half-staff until noon and then raise it to the top of the staff until sunset. Will you be flying the flag at your home this weekend?
Our flag is waving    magnificently!

3) Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, because flowers and ribbons were left on graves of soldiers. Do you find solace in visiting cemeteries?
I do find cemeteries peaceful.  When I was a child  visitng grandma  we celebrated Decoration Day the second weekend in May.  Everyone would come out   to place  flowers on graves. We kids would walk the road picking Queen Anne's lace,  lazy susans,  sweet peas,   and whatever we could find..  grandma would add poppies and other flowers from her garden.  We would compile  all the flowers  and  gather  our  cemetery baskets and  make  baskets of flowers   for  all of our  beloved    family who had passed...  even  grandma's parents and her sisters.  It would take a couple of cars to get all the flowers to the  cemetery!

4) The lyrics to this week's song were written by Julia Ward Howe in 1861. Her inspiration was a White House visit with Abraham Lincoln. In 2020, under normal circumstances, public tours of the White House are available but you must request your ticket in advance from your Member of Congress (House or Senate). When you travel, do you plan your trip weeks before you go? Or do you decide how your days will unfold once you reach your destination?
It depends on where we go...  When we toured New England we planned months in advance,  as  we   planned our Ireland trip   for a year..  But  usually  we just take a  short trip  as it comes.  I enjoy going to the Smokys and  being surprised around every corner!

5) Judy Garland performed this week's song before a live audience as a tribute to President Kennedy, who had been assassinated just weeks before. She knew Kennedy personally and considered this a farewell to a friend. While the performance was difficult for her -- at one point she flubs the lyrics -- she believed it was important, and could perhaps help the country heal. Tell us about a song that reminds you of someone you loved who is no longer with us.
My dad loved  music and there were some songs  that really moved him, like Strangers in the Night,
Love you, Dad!
Image may contain: 2 people, people smiling, eyeglasses, closeup and indoor

6) John F. Kennedy served in WWII and was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps medal and a Purple Heart. His brother Joe also served and was awarded the Navy Cross, but he received his citation posthumously, having died during a flying mission over East Suffolk, England. Here at Saturday 9, we consider everyone who serves a hero and want to hear about the veterans and active military members in your life.

7) Memorial Day is considered the beginning of the summer season. Will you be enjoying warm weather this weekend?  Our first    task is to  clean the front porch now that most of the pollen  has  had its day.

Hope to  be able to dine out  on a clean porch this weekend!

8) Berries are especially popular in summer. Which is your favorite: strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or raspberries?
I love blueberries    with  strawberries for  accent color!  yeah!

9) If you could attend a Memorial Day picnic with any fictional character, which would you choose?

I think it would be Robert E. Lee.  As a student of Virgnia history REL was a great  American and a great  man.. I wonder if he might  bring along Lt. Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson..  oh, what stories they could share... and since both were great  Christians  to sit  for a few hours   and listen to  their accounts across their whole lives  would be magical..
