Make Your Summer Break About God

Article by

Guest Contributor

No one should ever take a break from God, his glory, and the mission he gives each of us. When we break for the summer — from Sunday school, small group, community outreach, or wherever you serve in your local church — God still calls us to seek him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

The Bible constantly calls believers to an all-out, full-abandoned pursuit of wisdom. For example, Proverbs 2:2–5 exhorts, “[Make] your ear attentive to wisdom and [incline] your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”

This is not a seasonal calling. The summer does not give us permission to pull up a lawn chair and watch the race instead of running the race. When we say we are taking the summer off, we mean something radically different than disengaging from seeking God. Instead, we suspend certain ministry activities or events and fill that time with softball leagues, board game nights, and music in the park.

We’re not breaking from God, but swinging, competing, and listening for more of him. Filling our week with these activities does not transport us from engaging in the significant part of the Christian life (Sunday school and service projects) to the insignificant (ice cream cones and Florida vacations). No, it simply moves us from formal to informal (of course never neglecting to meet together in weekly corporate worship).

God designed all of our summer activities so that we would know him more, love him better, and have more fuel to live for his glory.

Indirect Godwardness

We cannot afford to take a break from the Bible’s call to search for wisdom with all our hearts. So, how do we search as we devour ice cream cones, watch the Minnesota Twins win at home, and paddle out on the lake? God says that we can enjoy each of these with a Godward gaze (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Now, we won’t be able to engage in these summer activities in the same waythat we drop to our knees to pray and study the Bible. Joe Rigney helpfully calls habits like studying the Bible direct godwardness. “Direct godwardness involves our conscious, intentional focus on God himself,” writes Rigney (The Things of Earth, 120). He compares that with what he calls indirect godwardness: “a subconscious focus on God while engaging with the world that God made” (121).

Direct and indirect godwardness serve one another. This idea doesn’t seem strange when we think of direct godwardness informing our indirect godwardness. This process happens when your Bible time informs how you go about your day. For example, Psalm 19:7 says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.”

How indirect godwardness serves direct godwardness may not be as obvious, though. Once again, Rigney helps us by explaining, “Indirect godwardness and a robust enjoyment of God’s gifts serves and increases direct godwardness by creating new mental, emotional, and spiritual categories for our enjoyment of God. It keeps us from being vague and indistinct in our minds” (126).

New Categories, Deeper Joy

This summer, God plans to flood you with input that requires you to seek wisdom and pursue knowledge. So, how can we leverage our summers for the glory of God? We use our time engaging in the world God designed for his glory to build categories for our direct godwardness. God designed our activities of playing outside to serve our time in the word and prayer together. They keep us from being vague when we read about God in his word.

But what might it look like this summer? My small group has decided for several reasons to take a break this summer. I love my small group; I love meeting with my small group; and I love the reasons we have decided not to meet for the next couple of months. So, here are two examples of how I hope our indirect summer godwardness fuels our direct godwardness.

Overnight at a Cabin: A family has invited our small group to stay at their cabin over a weekend. How might that help us know and enjoy God more?

Although we go to sleep that night, we will wake up the next day and still be together. This is a foretaste of the never-ending fellowship we will have in heaven (John 14:1–4Revelation 5:137:9).

The wonder we feel when we taste bacon in the morning not only reminds us how sweet it is that God has made all foods clean, but also declares that we have dominion over all creation. God enables us to raise pigs to delight our taste buds (Genesis 1:28Mark 7:19).

Drive-in Movie: Our group is already planning to watch a movie (or more) together outside during these weeks when we are not meeting.

The sense of anticipation we feel watching a thrilling scene unfold gives us a tangible experience that shows what it means to be waiting, longing, and feeling anxious for the second coming of Christ (Matthew 25:1–131 Corinthians 16:22).

The laughter that overtakes you in a comedy demonstrates that you were made for joy. There is nothing you can do to stop laughter. God wants you to know that he designed you to be happy, ultimately in him (Psalm 37:4John 6:3516:22).

Don’t waste your summer by ceasing to pursue God in all you do. Taking the summer off from formal ministry is not a move from the significant to the insignificant, but from formal to informal, from direct to indirect. Overnights at cabins and drive-in movies serve our long-term ministry.

Use this summer to seek wisdom, to know God, to love him more, and to live for his glory.

If you have commented to me lately please take a moment to read.. This is to YOU!!!!

I am so blessed that the Lord provided me with the  gift of crafting words.. I  certainly Not saying I  am   greatly talented  in  my craft,  not at all,  but  it does  give me the ability to reach out through  blogging....   (something otherwise I  would have been too shy to do  without it)  expressing things about  myself and  my heavenly Father,  and through that I have found the most  wonderful friends in the world..  We can chat as if we were chatting across the fence.. Maybe I should change my blog  name to Across the  Fence..  because I do   find sweeter, more caring    buddies online than I do across my wooden and wrought  iron fence here at home!!  I write this to say a big

for your  caring comments and  blessed greetings and  I love you   as  much  as any sister I might  have had!  I look so forward to  your comments.  As you know  next week  our  precious family will be here and I doubt if I am on very much..    but please know  your  comments  mean a lot to me!!  And please pray for my lower back..  It has been  aching badly since my fall.  I am hoping that it  like  other  aches and pains  will  quickly subside..  But that one concerns me a bit more!!

Friday Fave Five

Welcome to FFF!  Hosted by Susanne!

Good evening..  It is Thursday  evening    and    this has been a very wet  and    dismal week.. yet,..  it has also been quite  a busy one!  I really shouldn't complain because we certainly needed the rain!..

And I have lots of things  to  praise the Lord about.  Monday,  was a lovely  day and I spent  much of the morning  working on  sprucing up the house and, especially, the guest room and the girls' room, as our family will arrive on  next Monday for a week's stay with us.  I can hardly wait, and I love  planning  the fun things we    hope to  do  during   their  time with us! But,  I also  did have a mishap, on Monday.  I tripped over the  high threshold that separates the kitchen from our sunroom.   I  was  basically  thrown   through the air -it seemed  across the room and  landed face down    on the hard  cold  tile on cement floor.  Hubs wasn't in the house at the time.. but out in the yard away from     the back of the house and couldn't hear my cries for him.  So I lay there  quite shaken  trying to take account of my situation and my body. Nothing seemed to be  very much out of  shape  except I was terribly upset.  I  was wondering what if I can't get up.. Lynn probably wouldn't be back in the house for a while.. My assessment    brought me  to my senses that I needed to at least try to get up, and as there was a chair nearby  I  slowly sat up and  scooted over to it.    I leaned my arms  over the seat and  gradually pulled myself up onto my knees which I was terribly  afraid  would be excruciating,    as  I do have bad knees,  but  it wasn't as bad as I thought. Fortunately,  I  was able to   push up on my my feet without   much effort  and  soon I was standing.  I think I was able  because   I have lost   a bit of weight  since going to weight watchers   the month of June!  I steadied myself as I  attempted to  traverse the sunroom and  make my way to the   sofa..  where I lay down and  whimpered    a bit  just trying to relax.. I mean I hadn't fallen to this extent  in years..  and to be  honestly fair, I actually tripped and  fell.  And earlier I was so  happy because I was feeling strong and  steady and was    sort of running around the house  getting so much  done and  had just slipped on my sandals to  step outside to mail a birthday card to a friend.  But praise the Lord, I  wasn't  really injured  at age 72... I  did have a swelling on my leg,  but  it is just  sore today, and I hit my funny bone.  Yeow,,  every day,  I  lean onto it  pretty often  during my days!

Tuesday was   a  busy morning..  I had  my podiatrist appointment and   had quite a bit to work on  my tootsies. I have  crazy toes  that  become calloused and callouses  on the bottom  of my feet..  I had gone 2 months  between office visits  and  I was really looking forward to getting  things  done.. I am always so  happy to walk out of the office  with happy feet!!!

On Wednesday    we had a very early  twin appointment at the  dermatology doctor  for our annual body check and I   had 2 moles burned off.  I would have had more  , but I then had  our  Wednesday Morning  Bible Study  and I didn't want to be  crying in agony there.  But praise the Lord,  there has been no discomfort.  Well, it hurt like the dickens  while she was burning them off!!   But  praise  God,    this    has been a breeze from other times when I had  moles removed!!!  I am always  a bit  leary of going for these checks after  the  traumatic season I had  a few years ago when I ended up having  the end of my nose removed  with skin cancer.  and   the  ordeal of   skin grafts and     plastic surgery.   I was  one sorry looking gal  for  those months!!
But  now you can hardly tell it has healed so nicely!
But,I love to get those  words from the doctor, "  All OK!"
2017
SO much for which to be thankful!!!
(Please wear sunscreen..)

Today  was a lovely day!  I got together with two dear friends with which I used to pray  together    every week..  I mean  deep prayer   which led us to start a prayer initiative that  brought churches from our city together to pray once a month for  the nation  and well, everything.    We  did this for several years..  before life  just got in the way.. We said we'd still get together  just to share,  but  we didn't...  life for both of them  was  so  hectic  that  we simply  grew apart.   Well, getting together  this morning was  wonderful..   we shared,  so much , each of us  and then we prayed, just like old times!  Prayer is so important  in these days..  I think we will be getting   together much more regularly after today!Praise the Lord!!

The rest of this week I am going to be so busy!.  I have   to  work on my menus for the week upcoming  so I can have tasty  dinners   and stay on weight watchers. I have a WW recipe book  and it has some wonderful recipes    so I need to make some decisions and  then go marketing!   I also have to  work on the kitchen. for example, this  desk here in the kitchen looks  wild!

Hubs has been after me all week.. Well,  tomorrow    this will look much better!!!!
We all will feel so much better to get these  bits and pieces back in order!!!
God is so good  because He has  healed my body to a point where even after my fall I am feeling stronger and more able bodied to  get things done and to  look forward to  some fun times with our family!
Praying   for their  safe passage as they travel..    by air,    car, and train.    Lord , keep them all safe and well, in Jesus name!!!Amen!

Tuesday 4

Personal Snapshot

 Hosted by Annie!

Welcome back to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 where we try to get you talking, thinking and making new friends while you get to know old friends better.

Today is a hodgepodge of question for you to ponder:

1.  What TV programs that everyone else loved/loves did/do  you  dislike and why?I  detested  all the investigative  police  shows that have been so popular.  The only police show I enjoyed was Blue Bloods!

Conversely, what program did you love while everyone else thought it was awful? (or maybe a song, book..etc)  Gee, I don't watc that much seasonal tv.  .. I suppose    that I will  relate  my  likes  at this time of my life.  I love all the old  sitcoms and   I mean prior to  Norman and Lear and  All in the Family...   when    license  was taken  each week to  add demeaning and  anti family to  each season!

2   Do you resent serving without thanks or do you see a higher purpose behind it?  I do see a higher purpose in serving..   I don't do it for   what I can get,  but what I can do  for the Lord.. We are to manifest the love of Christ in the world,  because  the lost  may not see  Him at all unless His people  are actively  loving and serving,  sharing His  nature in the world!

3.  What flavor ice cream is your favorite and how do you like it served? (Sunday, Blizzard, cone, dish?)At the ice cream shop I  like strawberry, in a cone. I also love Dairy Queen cones  with a chocolate dip.

What toppings make your day?   I have been known to get a Sundae   with  chocolate sauce and whipped topping.

4. How many pairs of shoes do you own? All estimated: shoes  7; handbags 12, ! Do you use/wear them all?   I bought some walking shoes for our  Scotland trip and I probably won't wear those again! Should you weed them out?I know  that I ahve  too many purse..  I love buying them, but I don't  carry them all. It is hard for me to let them go,  but  I will make an effort to  purge one or two  this week.  I am getting another  load of items to take  to donate!!

Friday Fave Five

Welcome to FFF!  Hosted by Susanne!

This has been a good week...     which makes  fro a grand  opportunity to share    the blessings that  the Lord has bestowed on us!
***
I am so pleased  tahtour church offers a ministry for ladies to get to now each other better.  It is called 6 sisters where 6 ladies are   assigned to  groups   to meet  once a month  for fellowship or nasty, what ever they decide to do. My group includes, Gerri, Barbara, Beverly, Rosie,  Robyn, and Kayla.  We have  enjoyed much in each other's homes, or dining out  at  fun restaurants,  and I  hosed a spring tea party. This month Gerri and I hosted together at Lydia's, an Italian restaurant  and  Gerri  gave each of us the most precious  bouquet of  velvety carnations in the most luscious color  in  darling  rosy cruets she found at the dollar store!
I purchased some prayer devotion books  from Christian books  as  a small token for each of us.

I have to say that I love our home and am so pleased each room now is light and bright which makes me very happy. Except for over sunroom!  Isn’t that just crazy.. our sunroom was dark and drear!  And it is the first room visitors enter as they come to see us.  So what made this room so sad?  Mainly, the Cherry panelling, the matching colored blinds at each of the   7 large windows.  And lastly the large maroon and navy chairs that were moved into the room once we changed the decor in the living room last year to brighten the aspect in there.  So this week I sort of put my foot down and we decided to take the largest chair to the Salvation Army. Then just by keeping the blinds more open and changing up the decor in there, the room now seems much larger and much brighter. Now I enjoy sitting in there, whereas, it was so heavy, almost smothering,  and dark just a couple of days ago!

This may not seem exactly like a blessing, but it is  so wonderful to go in the sunroom now, to watch the birds at the feeders, and read our daily Bible readings!

I am so blessed to be regaining so much more strength , especially by just losing 12-15 pounds. My back doesn’t make me bend over as it did a month ago.  I can walk better, and am enjoying doing household, gardening tasks I doesn’t enjoy at all, a month ago! Praise God I am enjoying Weight Watchers so much, and with the online helps, losing is much easier!

Last night I so enjoyed a lengthy phone call with our daughter.  She is such a busy young woman, mother of two very vivacious young girls, she also works in her church,  does a couple of Bible studies, and volunteers at the girls schools.  But since they live 7 states away, as I get older I long to hear from her, hopefully every week.  I know she understands but sometimes that just doesn’t  happen. So last evenings call was a precious treasure to me!  I am so very excited about the families 4 day visit in a couple of weeks!

I am fairly certain there are many more blessings,  for this has been such a wonderful week, but I will just end by praising God for the great dental  report that hubs and I both received this week.  Sometimes one wonders as we become more and more mature if things are working as they are expected to, and we both got glowing reports about both teeth and gums.  ( Not to be too graphic)😛
