Thanksgiving Menu

Photobucket

Well, I have been up since 6 plotting and preparing... the final menu follows:
Citrus Rosemary Roasting Hen
Mama Jeans Delectable Cornbread Dressing
Savory Gravy
Honey Roasted Sweet Potatoes
Broccoli/Cauliflower Gratin
Carmelized Pearl Onions
Fruited Cranberry Sauce
Cloverleaf Rolls
Pumpkin Dump Cake/whipped cream
Iced Tea
The aromas make me feel like I may be doing alright with this first ever attempt to do the whole meal on my own.
The dessert, dressing, and cranberries are completed... the bird is in the oven, and the stock with innards is stewing on low. It is 10am and I think Im doing pretty good in the time department. We always eat around 12:30-1. Then it is great to be finished the rest of the day!!!!
I remember that growing up my maternal Grandmother always served dinner at 12:00 sharp... no matter what. We'd founder on her feast then leave and head to Granny's who served her's around 5. Then we'd O.D. on another feast. Wonderful memories... but oh, my belly!!!!
Oh, and bless his little
pea-pickin' heart, Lynn is downstairs vacuuming! Alright!!!!
PS It is now 5:30 and we've called it a day. Mom and dad were ready to return home by 4PM and dearest Lynn finished up the cleanup while I took them back home. what a sweetie! I is nice to kick back and be able to say" It truly was a huge hit!!!

Photobucket
We enjoyed feasting in the sunroom instead of the dining room. My parents hadnt seen any of the changes we'd made this autumn.
And I enjoyed using my red transferware!
Photobucket
Photobucket
The dressing tasted just like mom's except I did add dried cherries which I loved!!!
Here is our dessert... the pumpkin Dump Cake was to die for! YUMMMY!
Photobucket
As we prepped the hen, I made a citrus rosemary honey mixture for basting. The bird was so tender, juicy, and quite delicious.
Photobucket
PhotobucketPhotobucket
I was so glad Lynn watched Alton Brown demonstrate the proper way to carve the bird!

Photobucket
You can see Mom is faring so much better since her bad fall a few weeks ago, well about 6 weeks ago.

Photobucket

Ok, let's not be too judgmental.. I know my servings were a little on the huge side... but hey, it is Thankgiving after all.
Photobucket
We were excited to have a couple of guests show up right by our window!
Photobucket
Photobucket

And Mom and Dad enjoyed cosying up on our new sofa! Just like old times! SWeet!!
Pretty good for 90 and 86 years... and 65 years of marriage! Now that is a blessing!

A Little Coffee and Scone Time

Yesterday I was in a let's get together over a cup of coffee mood, and I was interested in doing a little baking so I mixed up a batch of cranberry orange with walnuts scones and ground beans for a piping hot pot of arabica and invited Dottie over for nice chat.

Photobucket
We usually meet out for coffee about once a week, but this time it was very wonderful to just serve at home.

Photobucket
Besides I was anxious to show off my new sofa we had recovered!. We are totally delighted with the effect. I just love the French Thistle fabric and upholstery shop!
Photobucket
I am sure Amanda is wondering all about the finished sunroom now so these photos are more for her benefit.
We flipped the room since we put in the new tile. We love having the eating area on the window side of the room!
Photobucket
We love looking out at the birds and watching the squirrels...
Photobucket
Also, Monday I slipped back into an old routine... I just had to visit my favorite consignment shop and there I found this irresistible painting.. I love sheep too much to not be completely mesmerized by its charms.
Photobucket
So I have to finish off this post by just admitting to amanda I am looking forward to Christmas when I see your sweetness reclining cosily on our new sofa!!!

Three or More Tuesday

Photobucket
What a privilege it was last week to kick off the holiday season. It all started with the Thanksgiving luncheon for us seniors!!!

Photobucket
I love the table decorations... This Jim shore Mayflower was extremely precious!
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
After the luncheon we cleared the tables and set up for our Benevolent Baskets. This year we did up 47 baskets to share with our Inner City Sister church families.
Photobucket
Our Sunday School children had brought in their favorite cereals, other classes had provided soups, pastas, veggies, all kinds of staples, and the committee had collected enough funds to purchase a turkey with all the trimmings, 5 lb. bags of potatoes, and apples, as well as paper products, and additional staples for each box. Also a nice pumpkin pie topped off each box. It was a lot of work, but we each received such a huge blessing knowing that these 47 folks would have a nice Thanksgiving!

The Simple Woman Daybook

FOR TODAY...

November 23, 2009 from Schotzy's Daybook

Outside my window... a very dreary day for me to have to be out in.... I was out at 7:30 this morning to the opthamologist.... then Wally World.... then to my parents to take them to the bank and grocery shopping! Whew! I was finally back by midafternoon!

Photobucket

I am thinking...
this is the first Thanksgiving when the family won't be all together.... you know there does come that time when children just can't be available to join in the family celebration... and they begin their own traditions. I am very excited that mom and dad will be with us... and I pray that since this will be my first time ever to do it all by myself... I'll make a good go of it!

I am thankful for...
my dear husband... he is such a great help to me... so thoughtful,, and I am so pleased that he said
"Yes" to teaching the Men's Bible Study breakfast for December... He is going so much in the Lord! Yahoo!!
Also, just check out this delicious meal Lynn cooked up for us.
Photobucket
Crab cakes with butternut squash with veggies... Yum YUM!!!
I am wearing... black velvet slacks and rose sweater

I am remembering...
that I have quite a bit of last minute things to accomplish before Thursday!!!!

I am going...

to really enjoy Lynn being off on Wednesday!!!

I am reading...

Authority to Tread, A Practical Guide to Strategic, Spiritual Warfare by Rebecca Greenwood
This is a truly amazing, powerful book!!!

Beth Moore's Daniel preparing for chapter 12,

Experiencing God chapter 11,

I am hoping...
to stay on my new eating pattern over the coming the weeks!!!!

On my mind...
I am going to be taking things just one day at a time for the next few weeks.... It seems I have been overwhelmed lately! I am definitely slowing down and spending time before the Lord in preparation for the holidays!

Noticing that...
there is quite a bit of dust on the corners.... time to vacuum! Did I mention... that is my most hateful chore!

Pondering these words:

May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership. Psalm 109:8

From the kitchen...

as I am still trying to clear out the freezer... tonight will be pork chops!

Thankful Thursday

As we approach our traditional Thanksgiving with all the details of preparing for hospitality and feasting I am shaken with the reality of what this season means for so many even in our communities. So many broken families who have no idea where their loved ones are.... the devastating reality of having lost jobs, inabilities to provide for families...perhaps the bittersweet memories of past celebrations that are impossible to recreate today.... utter despair of many people who dont even nor ever have had a traditional family gathering nor memories to cling to.. just eking out an existence perhaps blurred by the oblivion of substance abuse...
this reality really gives me pause!
Today I am honored to work on the benevelent committee, preparing 48 food baskets to share with our sister inner city church. What a blessing to be able to serve in this capacity. Pray with me over these basket(boxes) that each home will receive a special touch from God..that His name will be glorified in each home with thanksgiving and praise.

A Random Dozen

1. If you could master one sport, what would it be?

I would love to pick up where I left off about 30 years ago with golf.

2. When you make a major purchase, do you go with your gut instinct, or do you do research to make an informed decision?

I suppose both would be true. I choose to be more informed regarding mechanical, electronic purchases, but when it comes to home decor I go with instinct and passion at times. My style is rather eclectic and when I see something I just know I have to have it.

3. There is an old kids' game that says you can find out what your movie star name would be by using your middle name as your first name and the name of the street you grew up on as your last. What is your movie star name?

Jean Vermont.... well, sounds rather forties to me.

4. Would you rather give up your favorite music or your favorite food?

It would have to be food. I know I could come up with a good replacement for my favorite food, but music feeds my soul.

5. There are two types of banana preferences. One is pristine yellow, almost to the point of being green; the other is spotty and more ripe. Which is your preference?

Spmwhere in the middle. I do not like that bitter taste of the too pristine naner!

6. Your favorite tree is?

I really love red buds blooming in the spring.

7. On a scale of 1-10, how tech savvy are you?

2, maybe.

8. Has H1N1 touched your family?

No, and I am praying it will not!

9. Are you an analytical person, or do you just accept things the way they are without questioning or scrutinizing?

Not one bit analytical. I balance out my hubby in this area.

10. Is your personality more like that of a dog, cat, or Koala?

"I have days when I'm private and independent, like a cat. I have days when I'm cuddly like a Koala. And then I have days when I am friendly, have accidents and chase "squirrels" in my dreams, like a puppy." This response is so good and so much like me I have to keep it here.

11. Do you keep in touch with friends you made years ago?

Facebook has brought some old friends into my life, but I would love to find my old college roommate! Brenda, are you out there!!!!!! This is Peachy!

12. You are checking out at a grocery store. In the express lane, there are more people than the regular lanes, but of course, their load is less than those in the regular lanes. Which lane do you choose (assuming you qualify for the express lane) and why? I am not too smart I suppose, but this happened last night. I chose the shorter line with the basket that was brimming full of canned goods. I watched the express lane filter down, down , down and still just stayed in my slow lane.

A Random Dozen

November 11, 2009
Random Dozen :: November 11
It's a dreary Tuesday and I'm just in a pensive mood. So I thought I play along with this Random Dozen thingy!
1. What was the last song you listened to?

Well, I've been listening to my new cd I purchased at the Renewanation dinner.. The entertainment that evening was provided by Richard Kiser and his classical acoustic guitar. Fabulous... so I bought his Christmas cd.. I think it was Silent Night.

2. Have you ever had “buyer’s remorse” over anything? Oh, yes... I am a real sucker for buying cd's following church and other local events.. I want to keep the memory alive I suppose... but I have many a cd in my collection that just dont quite measure up to the actual event.... I guess the live experience adds more excitement and wonder to it all than you'd think. Thankfully, the above mentioned cd does not fit this category... it is wonderful!!

3. What is something in your life that you are thankful for now that you didn’t think you would be at the time of the event? (Something that seemed ill-timed, inconvenient or hurtful which turned out to be a good thing) When we left our previous church it was with very bittersweet motivations.. It is so difficult to leave a church family... but you just know when the time has come to make the move,
even as difficult as it is.... we actually should have made the move much, much sooner. It has made the greatest difference in our lives as a couple;... glory to God!!!!

4. Do you watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade every year? If so, do you have a favorite float or balloon? I guess it has been 20 years since I actually sat down to watch it... too busy in the kitchen! I do remember watching for Santa though, of course!

5. Share a quote, scripture, poem or lyric which has been an inspiration to you lately.
On Eagle's Wings
You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,
Who abide in His shadow for life,
Say to the Lord, "My Refuge,
My Rock in Whom I trust."

Refrain
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
The snare of the fowler will never capture you,
And famine will bring you no fear;
Under His Wings your refuge,
His faithfulness your shield.

Refrain
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
You need not fear the terror of the night,
Nor the arrow that flies by day,
Though thousands fall about you,
Near you it shall not come.

Refrain
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
For to His angels He's given a command,
To guard you in all of your ways,
Upon their hands they will bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

Refrain
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.

6. This is meant to be a fun question, and this is a G-rated blog, but please share a “guilty pleasure,” something that you enjoy that’s probably not the most edifying, time-worthy or healthy thing you could be indulging in. Did I mention this blog is rated G? I do spend an inordinate amount of time on Facebook! AAACK! Ok... I am a little addicted to Farmtown.

7. What Thanksgiving food are you looking forward to? Since this is the first time in 59 years that I am doing the whole meal on my own.... I am looking forward mainly to learning how to make the dressing.... if my mom ever writes down the recipe!!!

8. What is your favorite book to read to children, or what was your favorite childhood book? I loved reading Fantastic Mr. Fox to Amanda... "Will there be dogs?!!!"

9. Do you collect anything? (Feel free to post a photo.) I love angels

Photobucket

10. Gift bags or wrapping paper? I love to use both. I enjoy wrapping up my parcels with real ribbons and tying lovely bows, but there is something to be said for the simplicity of a nice gift bag as well!

11. Share an after-school memory from when you were younger. What was your routine like on an average day?

I lived nine blocks from my school. The walk home was up and down hills with few sidewalks. I remember especially when it rained wearing my galoshes and tramping through some gullies along one trek of the routine. On nice days I'd stop in at Wills Store for some penny candy if I was fortunate enough to have a penny. I liked to buy those wax lips of all things! Bleh! I walked to my neighbor's house across the street who watched me after school. I loved elementary school. Our school was quite old when I started in 1956. Each class had a cloak room. Man, did we ever think it was fun fooling around in there getting ready to go home in the afternoon. I remember wearing woolen leggings in first grade... what a pain to put on in there. And we wore cotton dresses or skirts with suspenders... if we didn't wear suspenders they'd fall down off of us. Yikes!

12. True story: This reminds me of living near a Mr. Moe's hamburger joint. When I was about 13 and I'd come home from school hungry, so I'd raid my dad's drawer for 19 cents and run down to Mr. Moe's for a hamburger. Now I realize that I was raiding his coin collection !! Triple yikes!!

Spiritual Warfare

Photobucket
Ever since our prayer team started our concerted prayer initiative over our church and especially during my study on Experiencing God, I have become very interested in strategic spiritual warfare...as I have been reading Greenwood's book, Authority to Tread, I have learned so much about reclaiming the "land" that the enemy has sought to take as his. The enemy puts up obstacles against the Gospel of Jesus... that seeks to thwart salvation and growth in the knowledge of God. The desired result of spiritual warfare is in the redeeming of the "land" from darkness bound by territorial spirits.... to free those who unwittingly are gripped by false religions, including Freemasonry and the Eastern Star. I know, one would argue... but there is nothing wrong with these organizations... they do good works..... I am proud of my Freemasonry roots. You can only see the notable list of founding fathers and political leaders who are part of this secret society to know that there is a strong heritage of freemasonry in our nation, our localities and even in our churches. I am sure that many, many fine upstanding chrisitians are unwittiingly involved in these groups and they never experience anything outwardy that suggests the occult. Yet, the very nature of the organization(Secret society) has at it's core the the pagan deities of Egypt. We see its influence in many of the symbols on our money, and in our capitol city.
God will not share His diety with another. I myself used to be an avid member of the teacher's sorority Alpha Delta Kappa. I was proud to be a member chosen for my exemplary teaching practices and was enamored with the "good works" we did for the community. Yet in our meeting we used the secret password and ritualistically repeated the name of a goddess. I thought nothing of it. I knew I didnt worship her, yet it wasnt until I retired and pulled out of the sorority that I really developed a closer walk with the Lord... when He really revealed Himself to me much much more dynamically. Some of my best friends are Masons. I just wonder if perhaps they sometimes feel that they wish they could hear God's voice more succintly. I'm praying that they will "see" the light and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Freemasonry is not for Christians. It is just a trap to keep Chrisitans from being as useful in God's kingdom as they could be.

The Simple Woman Daybook

Photobucket

FOR TODAY...
November 16, 2009 from Schotzy's Daybook
Outside my window... the promise of another almost spring-like day! With not a cloud in the sky, and the sun streaming in... I am thinking about a morning walk.

I am thinking...
about what to serve on Thanksgiving. ...so many choices and not enough time. I hate to admit this one.... but which my mom always wanting to do thanksgiving, here I am 59 years old.... and it is the first time I have ever done Thanksgiving all by myself. I mean... I've done the turkey, but never done the dressing..... mom's dressing is to die for!!! She hasn't even told me the recipe yet. I hope she remembers it!!!

I am thankful for...
blogging. This exercise really helps me focus on my life... what is happening... and what really matters. Sometimes I'll start feeling I don't know kind of blue and sorry for myself... but when I go to write about things I immediately start to see the silver linings in my life and I always start to feel better.

I am wearing... jeans and a light green shirt

I am remembering...
thanksgiving of the past.....at home as a child reaching for the drumstick.....the year we got married and were living in Germany. Thankfully, our friends, Vyto and Veronica invited us to their house in Worms, and she cooked a delightfully German inspired feast. Then going to mom and dad's new home in the country ... over the river and through the woods all those years... taking Amanda up to Mama Jean's and Pop Pop's for Thanksgiving...it seemed to snow before we could get home back then... oh and the traffic coming home was horrendous! Then our celebration shifted to meeting extended family at Myrtle beach for the week of Thanksgiving.. pooling our resources and sometimes even
letting Cracker Barrel do the cooking! Last of all, for the past 5 years we have gone to Amanda's for Thanksgiving and everyone brought a dish or two.
So here we are at another turn in the road...establishing another family tradition....the sky is the limit.... I do wish it to meaningful Just us and my parents... maybe a year for reflection and remembrance! We do have so much for which to be thankful!

I am going...
to be doing a little Christmas decorating around the house this week. Maybe working on a few table arrangements and doing a bit of organizing in preparation for the holidays.

I am reading...

Authority to Tread, A Practical Guide to Strategic, Spiritual Warfare by Rebecca Greenwood
This is a truly amazing, powerful book!!!
Beth Moore's Daniel preparing for chapter 11,
First Place for Health unit 6,
Experiencing God chapter 10,

I am hoping...
to be much more inspired to keep up with my daily tasks regarding First Place this week.... I need to keep my eating journal and menus written down as well as the Bible study and memory verses!

On my mind...
I am so concerned about the church universal... Pastors have gotten so far removed from what the real focus of the church should be... the churches have been lukewarm because there's nothing exciting going on in the church. The people are so complacent the door is open for strife and disharmony. God must be so ready to spit us out of His mouth. We are the"I" generation. What can I get out of it... we've lost sight that it is all about God, His work that needs to be done.. allowing God to work through us by the power of the Holy Spirit... Oh, God,, bring revival... empower preachers to preach the wonder working power of God and pull us in deeper, Lord!

Noticing that...
gray hair is becoming more and more evident in our lives!
Yikes!!

Pondering these words:

I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.Photobucket

From the kitchen...
well, since I need to make room in the freezer for a turkey breast, I ll be thawing something... let's see....

From my picture journal...

I am so excited that Amanda and Joshua are involved in such an amazing church. Yesterday the speaker was Ravi Zacharias! Wow!!!

The Lord is really leading me this week... showing me just how to see Him at work around me so that I can jump in at that point and co-labor along beside Him. Last week we were so privileged to attend the Renewanation Dinner in support of Parkway Christian Academy's vision to provide a free Chrisitan World View to every child in the nation. God is mightily at work in this endeavor. 800 people filled the Hotel Roanoke ballroom to catch the vision. The founder of Chick-Filet was the keynote speaker and a huge supporter to begin a tidal wave of free Christian education. Our state and local governement is working along side these visionaries to help fulfil this work. What an amazing opportunity for us to be able to come along side this initiative and help bring about this possibility in the future lives of our children!
