Joyful. Joyful

Finally, the  Christmas   box is out of the living and   things are  shaping... perhaps not   completely  but  well  enough to make me  happy  with my  quiet time in there! Because of a   decorative light problem I  did  some  changing about to make it all work....  the mantel  and  the  tree in the corner  are   finally    complete!

Here is one of the  several changes that have  happened  that I  wrote of in my previous post....
We have arrived at  a juncture in life when  neither of us  was willing to put the big tree up....  so  We are enjoying  our year round trees  in new   venues and new purposes....  it surely is much easier!
I had   a  lovely  wrought iron planter  as the centerpiece for the mantel,   but  it was  a  royal pain  plugging the lights in  so  I switched it for this   sweet  medieval lantern
So now the living room is aglow with  lights.....  I do enjoy them so!

The  creche   in candlelight...
The  sweet  vintage  ceramic  tree  hubby's mother made  over 50 years ago....  hard to believe   we lost her over 45 years ago.
So there by the door is   my   favored  arched planter.... I like it there because  that   outlet is connected to the   switch by the stairs and serves as our night light in the evenings!
But because of the  rough iron I  must use   cloths  on the  surfaces.....
  A bit of a wider view on into the  dining room...
I must say the lights of  Christmas  certainly  dissipate the  drear of  rainy days
I am still loving   the    Christmas tray  that I mother painted and sold in a Guild  craft show  at least  25 years ago   that I found  in a  local consignment shop...  I  posted about it last week.... It really  boosted its  persona  when I simply  removed the sad ribbon and   sanitized it nicely....  I can feel mama smiling down on me as I am typing this post!
I know, previously, I  had  Mr. and Mrs. Fox  visiting  on the   hutch....  I think I am liking the  look  just fine this year....   everything in its season of life!
This year I am loving the  red and white gingham ribbon  with the red and white  dishes....  I really must  find another roll of that ribbon...  maybe a trip to Michael's is in my future!

Happy Homemaker Monday

Today I am joining   HHM ...
Good morning... it's the start of a new week... and soon to be the beginning of December.. one of my favorite months!

The weather:::
Today is  dreary...dreary... dreary...   temperature is  41  and   90%  rain for the next  3 days!!!

As I look outside my window:::gray...gray...gray

Right now I am:::
Sitting in  my draughty kitchen.....  hahaha.. I love our home,,, but there is no heat source in our kitchen...   the  builders put a radiator under the sink  back in the day  when cabinets  were not    built in.... then years later  prob in the seventies  when they updated the kitchen  they took the radiator out to  build in the  cabinet area...when we  bought the house  we lived here    for a while before we realized there was no heat   at all in here,, but that was  fine becasue  since we were both working  it didnt matter for the radiators in other rooms   finally  warm the space...  now that my computer station is here I have purchased a  ceramic heater  which I love....

Thinking and pondering:::
how the seasons of life   change  and   bring  monumnetal changes in how  one  plans for and  creates  the  mood of Christmas...I remember  when that  day  came for my  grandmother....  the year  her   plans for decorating and baking  changed dramatically.  I suppose she was  about my age, maybe ...   but goodness to mercy  she seemed old to me at that time!   Yikes!!!!   But no...     now that I really  consider  it...  it is  how society has changed....back in those days    the  family at large  lived relatively nearby... say  at least  within a few hours drive... they all,   aunts, uncles,  and   cousins  went to her house for  the holidays  and we  all  stayed for days...   usually  sleighriding and  drinking gallons of hot cocoa..  shooting mistletoe out of trees....  it was all so   deliciously   wondeful...  but that all stopped  when   she  turned    about 75 -80... at which time  the family came  but  we all brought the food.  so  whew.. I  do have  about  10 or more years to go!     Man!  I do feel a bit better!

Today families are all so spread out....  our one   child lives a two day drive  away...  times have changed... and   I have to learn to  adjust!  But I can still  remember... and dream!

On my bedside table:::
Jesus Calling.. by Sarah Young,  a glass of  water, and  my  December  Bliss Magazine

On my tv this week:::
Now that we have   Netflix.....  so many  things....   Foyle's War,  The  Great British  Baking  Competition of 2010 , Monarch of the Glen,  Midsomer Murders,    anything   British!  heheheheheh

Listening to:::
 O Holy Night from  my  blog

On the menu for this week:::
Monday -  pot roast with  all the   lovely veggies  and   fresh baked rolls
Tuesday - leftovers
the rest is a toss up.  I  never plan ahead

On my to do list:::
Laundry - linens  mainly
Finish decorating the house for Christmas
Start the Christmas cards

Happening this week:::
Monday -housework,   cyber chopping  for  christmas
Tuesday -  face time   with our  girls,  Ladies'  Prayer group,   still need to get my  hari color done
Wednesday - Dr.. appointments for us both,
Thursday - lunch out with   a friend
Friday - hopefully nothing

What I am creating:::
  A  Christmas  atmosphere for the two of us!

                                     My simple pleasure:::

Having  the time to sit in the light of the  Christmas lights in the  parlor and   enjoy a cup of tea and listen to   Olde  English Christmas   carols

Looking around the house:::
the word of the day is partial... every room is partially   decorated...   I'll be   so pleased to get  the   packing boxes  put away.

From the camera:::
Yesterday we  went to our local   Catholic church  for  an awesome performance of  Lessons and Carols   put on by the local College Choir....  It was as if the angels with heralding the coming of the Lord!!!

we arrived an hour early  and  the  church was already half full..   By showtime  there wa s breathing room only...   but this was after all the first  celebration of the Advent season!

The acoustics  in the cathedral   are   amazing!  The  voices rang out clear and   gloriously!

Prayer List:::

All my friends and family, our  churches,  our  government,   the crises  in the world.    our  societal ills,  and Israel  and the Middle East

Bible verse, Devotional:::
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Friday's Fave Five

                                           Joining with  Susanne   today   on  this fun  meme!

1. Today we received the  best Thanksgiving card  we ever got in the mail.... Now  our precious   baby girl   prob 28 years ago  made us a card and   gave it to us.....   but today we  got  this precious care from our  2 year old granddaughter  in the  post.....here is  was last night  when  we did face time and she was  donning her   gobbler crown she made with her daddy!  Bless her heart,,, we love her so!

2.  Hubby ordered  my Christmas present today  from Ireland...  He actually spoke to  a guy in Cork  who said he actually lived along the Ring of Kerry. Im pretty  excited about this!!!!  We were just in Cork  7 months ago!

3.  I love Christmas, and it is so much fun to    start  decorating and   as I said   previously  it truly is an evolution of  discovery what  I like best.... Like today  I wasnt happy with the lights I put around the  hutch,  so  I went out and could only purchase 1 set  that  was long enough since they dont  string together....  so tomorrow I have to take the Christmas tree down and  restring those lights  to   match  them up  .. oh.. it's a long story...   but Im glad it isnt  the big tree!
4.   Today hubby actually waited on me to stop in at my favorite consignment shop....
I stopped in to get the lights... but.....

when I saw this   Syracuse   platter  I fell in love... looks so sweet with my  red and white transfer ware... then I saw this   plate from Bunratty Castle,   in Ireland....  had to get it at  $4.98 less 20%...  I mean.. really??
But then as I  was  shopping   a booth   run by a sweet friend  from  my church I looked down and this caught my eye.. it looked  so familiar...
 on closer look,  I saw it...  my mama's  signature... she had painted it and sold it probably  20 years ago at the Craft  Guild Christmas show!
My mom  signed  "Jean's Things".... dad  cut out  and put things together,  and mom  did the decorative painting....  I didn't really need another of her trays...   I probably have  4..  for every season...   but I couldn't not get it..  it blessed my heart!
5.  Lots of   folks  Christmas lights  went up around  the neighborhood....  folks are really into the  spirit  this year....  the  sales people were  so jolly today, and the  waitress at  Ruby Tuesday wa s  so sweet....  It  just seems to stand out more to me  this year   than ever before...

PHoto Challenge for Christmas

December Photo a day Challenge copy
Last year I followed and participated in this   meme, but  Alas, I dont think it is  up anad running this season,  but I really had fun with it so I will  do this   just to have something to do until my  sweetie calls and  tells me differently!!!!

Through Doorways

As I was  walking through the house just now I saw images of   great  festivity,,,  but  right  along beside would be  ribbons trailing out of boxes or  a forgotten ornament that had fallen  by the wayside!  Or, one  corner of the room looks   pretty cool,   while   nothing is done at all   right over there...  Christmas  decorating is an evolution I can  wrap my mind around and totally believe in! So then I thought maybe just a quick glimpse just as I enter a room would make me feel better about my  Christmas preparations.. of course, I know it is  still  early.. it is Thanksgiving Day, after all...  but when  a late breakfast  was  your  dinner and  and  I cant think of a thing I really want  for supper...  what better to do than  start  decorating for Christmas!
So here  are my snapshots through the doors!
 Coming from the hall  trying to  decide ... do I want to go into the living room, or the dining room?

 Coming  from the kitchen  looking into the  living room
 Peering into the dining from my  desk in the kitchen.. how about  on into the living room from my desk!!
 from the living room into the dining room!

 Yes, the house looks pretty  good  with   limited views!!!!
 from the front door...
 what about into the kitchen  or out to the sunroom
 Yes...  I like the sunroom....   time to  curl up and look at  that latest  Christmas magazine!   Bye Ya'll!

Hodge Podge Wednesday

1.What's something you wish you knew how to do, but feel like it's too late to learn?

So many things...

a. to play the Irish harp.. you know the smaller ones, or the hammered dulcimer

b. to knit well, my knitting is clumsy and very poor

c. be a truly organized person... housewife, etc.

d. be a competent seamstress... oh, the cute little girls' dresses I would make.... I am going to try to make something for Christmas, but I don't feel very competent.. at all!

2. Your least favorite thing to shop for? Why?

I don't like to buy shoes, although I need some badly.. I had a lovely worn out pair of Clark's that I wore to Ireland and they were looking so scuffed and I needed room in my suitcase so I left them in a hotel In Dublin for the maid...they still a lot of life, but I knew I had a newer pair at home... but they aren't nearly as comfy... and my right foot is a bit damaged from a ruptured plantar plate some years ago.... and shoes have to feel great or I cant wear them..... I have learned to not be vain about my feet.... I had my injury a few months prior to our daughter's wedding and even months following I could only wear a bed room slipper.. so I bought black velvet ones to wear to the wedding. I was determined not to be miserable at the wedding....but it is what it is!

3. How has the celebration of Thanksgiving today changed from when you were growing up?

Goodness, Thanksgiving was truly feast time.... I believe every Thanksgiving we were to grandma's... first mom's parents where there were scads of cousins and aunts and uncles and the kids were relegated to the basement to eat..then we would do to dad's old home place and Grannie would serve up another huge meal..... she always had at least 3 meats and 2 cakes and a pie or two... and all done on a wood cook stove.... loved it all but we were always stuffed to the gills.... but the time my daughter came along these days were past and my mom and dad took their turn at hosting and the foot was plentiful and we developed the tradition of going around the table to tell the things for which we were grateful... I always read a poem from an ideals book. This continued even well past 1997 when my parents moved here to be closer to us... In fact, my mother would not relinquish Christmas or Thanksgiving to me until about 5 years ago.. so I am not a very accomplished turkey chef.... I have learned to love tenderloins and cutlets of turkey.... Now our daughter has moved far away and hubby and I have the tradition now of inviting friends without family in for celebrating the bounty of the season. This year we've already had our special day and I plan to relax on Thursday.... and continue decorating for Christmas...

4. What's something that when other people see it, reminds them of you? Explain.
I suppose they think of me when they think about tea parties.... not that many folks around here love to host them like I do.... I would also say that when they think of things Olde English or Scottish or Irish they will think of me because they know how much I am into that.... my sensibilities are very old fashioned... back to the Olde Country in many instances.... My carols are medieval.... my design style is almost medieval... only as my finances and my Scotch mentality will allow! HEHEHEHE

5. If you could guest star in a TV show, what would it be and why?

I wouldnt mind portraying a long lost love interest to Tom Selleck in Jesse Stone, or to Michael Kitchen in Foyle's War.
6. Have you ever farmed or spent any time on a farm? Are there farm stands in your little corner of the world and do you make it a point to shop there? If so, what item do you particularly like to buy from a roadside stand or farm shop?
My maternal grand parents wre dairy farmers and I spent many weekends and weeks in the summers there until I was about 15 when they retired to moved into a new home over on the main road. Of all my cousins I was probably the most citified of them all...I wasnt exactly comfortable climbing the fences and being chased by bulls... nor side stepping things Id rather not fall into .... but I loved gathering the eggs, and picking apples.... even slopping the pigs was fun!
I live on the edge of town right off the road that goes up into the country where there are many farms. Sometimes in summer they set up roadside stands not too far from our house. I like to get cantalopes, farm fresh tomoatoes, cucumbers and green beans, and country ham.

7. What's something you've experienced recently that made you feel a sense of awe or wonder?
I participated in a 10 day consecutive prayer initiative to pray for revival in our community.... We saw many manifestations of the Holy Spirit through the prayers... it was as if the Spirit was giving each of us a piece of a beautiful tapestry.. as one would pray then another would pray something so similar but it would always build on the original... The Lord was speaking to us all in a unity of thought that was a huge blessing and opened many doors in the spiritual realm... each day brought a different component or area for which to pray but the unity and the things each person brought to the prayer was definitely Spirit led....

8. Insert your own random thought here.
We are having such a grand time this afternoon and evening singing along with our choral cd's learning the music and the words to the songs we will be singing at the Christmas pageant at our church. Hubby sings tenor/baritone and I'm a first soprano!

It's a Red and White Christmas

No Place Like Home

So excited about  Sandi's new   Monday meme.... celebrating    the holidays in style!  Today  was  my day of transition....  time to pack up autumn and   start  the  big plan   for  Christmas!
So  right now.   I  am starting with a clean slate!Looks pretty dull doesn't it....  Well,   as  I am planning   for  the    holiday  festivities  I   have  made the first   great  decision... I have traded in my  black transfer ware  for the red!   HAHAHAHA!
and  this lovely   English pastoral    by Johnson  Brothers is my  inspiration....    the tea is also putting a smile  on my face and a lilt in my step.....

So now I   will take  a stroll through the past few years  to  glean a few ideas...
Now  this    was  a favorite    from a couple of years ago....
 photo 2012-11-30041818_zpse78ff8d5.jpg
I love  working plaids  into  every  room!  Must be the Scotch  in me... and I'm not talking the liquid kind!
That year I was  working the fruit theme, at least on the mantel....
 photo 2012-11-30041244-Copy_zpsdcccb541.jpg
it looked pretty  great  at night  all alight!
 photo 2012-11-29064523_zps85c20834.jpg
  but all mantels look  wonderful a t night... like the  angel one...
 photo Christmas2009203.jpg
  I  loved the  dining room,  but alas,   there was no red transfer ware   to be seen...
 photo christmasparty110-1.jpg
I  am loving the   Christmas  village  and  once we cleaned the basement  we found  our    houses! yayayaya
  (My bad)
  photo CHristmas2010090.jpg
 and that year the   fox family and the red transfer ware  found  their home in the dining room!
 photo CHristmas2010106.jpg
But actually I had just started  collecting it back then....
IN 2013  daddy  went to heaven the week before Christmas....  it was a more serious  time... but  still  very  lovely,  because our   precious granddaughter  had recently been born!
 photo christmasparty027.jpg
it appears that the   red  transfer ware  will be  something a bit   new and fresh this year!!!
hmmmmm...

I  am pretty excited about  this   plan for the  2015....  I have this whole week to think about and put it into action!!!!   YAYAYAYA!
